DVI widescreen monitor problem

I just picked an LG W1952TQ 19" widescreen monitor and connected with the included VGA cable. The monitor is set to its native resolution of 1440X900 60 htz. The picture looks great with the VGA cable.

Since both the monitor and video card have DVI connections, I bought a DVI cable to hookup to see if there would be any improvement with the image. I disconnected the VGA cable and connected the DVI. Here's the problem. My display setting in the control panel reads 1440X900 60 htz, yet the monitor screen now shows 1280X1024 with a refresh rate of 75 htz. The screen image is larger and now does not fit the screen. I have to use the mouse on each side of the screen to scroll the entire image to see it. There are no monitor controls to allow the resolution to be changed on screen. When I disconnect the DVI cable and reattach the VGA cable, the image is again normal at 1440X900 60 htz.

I'm running an XFX 7600GT with the latest drivers. After searching the net, I have found instances with various monitors that experience this anomaly. So far I have not found any solutions.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have a driver for the monitor?

Re: DVI widescreen monitor problem

Yes, I did install the driver that came with the monitor. There are no controls on the monitor menu that has a switch to go from VGA to DVI. When I have the DVI cable connected and turn my system on, the monitor screen says "digital" input. When I have the VGA cable connected, the screen reads "analog". This really has me baffled! I bought the monitor at Best Buy and have called the service area (Geek Squad). They said they never have heard of the problem, but suggested it was probably software related. I don't know what else I can do since I have the latest Forceware drivers installed.

I must admit, the monitor's image is really great, so no complaints in the analog mode. However, since DVI is available I would like to compare image quality between the too.

Any other suggestions other than taking the monitor back to Best Buy, or buying a different brand would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Re: DVI widescreen monitor problem

I was hoping that someone, somewhere, has experienced this same problem and would be able to offer some suggestions on a solution. Maybe this anomaly is just an isolated instance with my monitor. Still, any ideas would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: DVI widescreen monitor problem

Sounds weird... must be software issue. Have you played with the ez feature? Its not zoomed in is it?

Re: DVI widescreen monitor problem

Thanks for your suggestion Zapionics. Yes, I did try the EZ feature. That did not cure the problem. It seems very odd to me that the analog signal is perfect, and the digital signal is not. I do agree that it is probably a software issue, however, I'm not ruling out a faulty monitor even though that is unlikely. I'm taking the monitor back to Best Buy today so they can hook up a digital cable to see if the problem occurs with their system. If it does, then its a defective monitor. If not, then I know it is a system problem on my end that I will have to solve, or just live with the analog cable. Thanks again for your response.

Re: DVI widescreen monitor problem

Problem solved!

After reading countless postings at various sites on the net, I decided to go into the Nvidia Control Panel and set up a custom resolution, even though that resolution was already showing up in the "display properties settings". Once the 1440x900 custom resolution was created, tested, and applied, there it was, my widescreen monitor displaying a digital signal properly. And it does make a slight difference in the crispness of text, and the richness of colors.

I will continue to scratch my head as to why the analog cable would work without issue, yet the DVI would not. Honestly, I really don't know exactly where the problem is hiding. I'm sure it has to do with the Forceware driver and my LG widescreen monitor. I'm exploring the Forceware .inf file that is included with the driver version. Something has to missing somewhere along the line.

Hopefully this information will help someone that is experiencing this same problem.
