Cool Finally. Gooood-bye miserable inkjet.

I now have the Samsung ML-1710 Laser printer.

After rebate at Best Buy the printer is $129.

Nice, I have never liked inkjets and never recommend them unless the person needs to print in colour but even then I recommend that person have a laser and an inkjet.

Laser's look so much better for what people in general need and their running costs are soooo much less in the long run. When it is cheaper to buy a new printer then buy new ink it is pretty sad.

Most people just see the up front cost of a laser as prohibitive but when they are buying $30USD inks every other week as junior prints of everything he can find it definitely adds up quickly.

In fact, inkjets actually use the colour to make the blacks look better thus using up your colour ink faster.

You hit on the very reason why I finally had it with inkjets. $30-35 for the color cartridge is crazy. A 3,000 sheets toner catridge is $80. Gee, I might get what? 300 sheet for that $60+ worth of colour and black inkjet cartridges? Yeah, I finally had it with inkjet. I was looking for the colour cartridge I needed when I could not find it I said forget it-hello laser printer.

Nice buy there Point. I'd like a laser too but don't print enough to justify the cost when my Cannon uses cartridges I can buy off eBay for 1.00 ea for black and 2.00 for color. We have Lexmark lasers at work and they are sweet. Laser does look sooooo much better.

On a little side note though, most of those 30.00+ cartridges have the print head built in which is the expensive part. A new print head for my printer runs over 50.00 bucks.

I went inkjet once again for one reason only... so I could print photos taken from a digital camera. I rarely use the inkjet to print other things at home. If I do I set it to draft mode for text and use very little ink with that setting.

If I need to print large documents I do it at work on a color laser printer that sits next to my desk... a Ricoh AP3800C.

This is an awesome printer for the office and costs per page are very low but it won't print photos as good as a decent inkjet can. Then again that's all inkjets are really useful for...

Unfortunately I don't have the money or space for that Ricoh at home.

Now a color laser really piques my interest. When I hit the lottery as I'm guessing that thing costs more than what I make a year

...and don't get too excited about color on laser printers. While it is great for presentations that contain color in print or graphics, photos are very dissappointing. My 85 dollar HP DeskJet can print better photo quality. Of course it takes almost an entire lifetime to do it compared to the Ricoh. Color laser technology even in high end printers can't come close to a good inkjet when it comes to hi-res photos.

Re: Finally. Gooood-bye miserable inkjet.

This statement is a matter of conjecture - I mean the statement of "miserable inkjet" - IMHO.

I print approx. 3-400 pages of text each month using Epson Stylus Photo 890 with costs less than my old Lexmark WinWriter laser - toner cartridge is 180 dlrs approx. in this country (Norway)

My "secret" is supply of good quality chinese ink cartridges at $ 5.-a piece and a resetting device for the chip increasing the use to 25 to 40 percent of indicated ink content.
For photowork is another Epson 890 with archieval quality ink using a so called continous ink feed - CIS.

Clogging of jets has not been a problem- not a single instance so far - my previous Epson 600 however was a a pain in this respect.

My supplier of ink is MIS Associated Inc. MI for fast and efficient service - 3-4 days transatlantic.

Ricoh AP3800C Printer with a sr770 finisher

Hi

I saw this post and thought this may be a good place to post my situation as well. Here goes: I am having a bit of difficulties and wondered if anyone could help. I have a Ricoh AP3800C Printer with a sr770 finisher (sorter). I am getting an error code saying that a cover on the sr770 isn't closed. I have cleaned the contacts / magnets thinking that this is the error .. but to no avail. Has anyone else come across this error and found a remedy ? I want to save myself a few bucks by not calling in the Richoh techs. Any suggestions are appreciated. Take care.

Andrew

Good choice Pointreyes. I purchased the Samsung ML 1430 about 2 years ago. I would never go back to ink. The half cartridge that came with my Sammy lasted about 1500 pages. I recently purchased a new toner cartridge for 58$. I fully expect about 3000 pages of text with this. I used to have an Epson inkjet and that thing sucked royally. Printer clogged all the time, I couldnt use refills because I couldn't figure out how to trick the electronics to think it was full again.

I am very interested in a color laser. I really want a all in one color laser for under 500$ before I pull the trigger.

They do have color lasers under 500 now, but their color performance is paltry and they do not have any scanning/faxing capabilities.

ccs1, I have no idea about that printer and how to help you. Have you tried doing a hard reboot on it?

I have been using a laser printer (HP 4M or 4L--I forgot) at home for years, although I recently added a HP PSC 1315 inkjet, primarily to replace my scanner, which failed. It can also be used as a standalone photocopier, which is a cool bonus. That said, I agree that the way to go with a primary printer is laser. I hope you enjoy your new printer, pointreyes.

color lasers are coming down in price at least. Here is are some examples:

http://www.cdw.com/shop/search/results.aspx?grp=LAC

at home I have an Epson color 860. I have to clean the heads every other week because I don't print very much from it.

at work - we use a Lanier 020C for color printing, and use a Lanier 5685 copy machine for black and white. It's pretty cool having a copy machine rigged as a network printer.

I did not know you could get a color laser for $600. Still, a set of replacement black, cyan, yellow, and magenta cartridges will run over $300--even if they do last 2,000 pages.
