Monitor?

Hi all,

I'm due for an upgrade of a LCD Monitor which my old 21" HP P1120 CRT have served me well for the past 5 years. I have noticed in the last couple of weeks I am getting white lines through the screen even in game play. Does anyone know what causes this?

thanks

The electron gun is failing in some way I'd assume. 5 years sounds about right for a CRT lifespan.

I think you'll be impressed by today's LCD offerings. I held out with my monitor but was greatly satisfied when I went to my 20.1" widescreen LCD.

Don't get a 30" monitor. The scaling technology has not yet gotten up to the 30" screen size yet for LCD moniters which means you get an interpolated picture at any resolution other than the native resolution, not a scaled picture.

21" has scaling technology. Not sure about the 24" monitors. I'd have to research that one.

traveler is right, I've heard less than stellar things about available 30" LCD's for computers. I think there's some 24" ones that are pretty good though.

I'm lost, I heard a lot of good things about 30"monitors for gaming like the
Dell and HP but you do get the odd here and there.
The only reason I like the 30" because I like the high Resolution on it and they
say its lot better than the 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz.
And I also heard that there going to be a 120mhz LCD monitors coming out
this year but can create ghosting with 120mhz if thats true

Should I wait or not?

Well, to run games at those resolutions you'll need a monster video card.

I am in the stage of building a new computer after saving for 3 years.
I am looking at the Quad6600 (45nm), bearlake motherboard, DDR 3 ram,
8950 video card, new sound card maybe the Bluegears B-Enspirer for gaming
and the big LCD monitor which might be the 30" or the 27"
if everything goes right and comes out this year? (fingers crossed)

And who said all that? Salesmen, or Independent Hardware reviewers?

A 30" LCD monitor will look fantastic if, and only if, The game is written for the native resolution of the 30" monitor.

Go to Dell. Look at the resolution of the 30" monitor. It will say 2560 x 1600. Now, what games do you play that are written for 2560 x 1600 resolution? It will also look nice at half that or 1280 x 800 resolution. Any other resolution used will not give a proper picture because of the randomness of interpolation.

But ....

Now why settle for 1280 x 800 resolution on a 30" monitor when you can get 1650 x 1050 support on another monitor in native resolution or scaled resolution for a fantastic picture for less money? Why pay for a 30" monitor (without scaling) when the only thing that will look good on it will be .... Hmmmmmmmm. .... Help me out here Buds. .... What is written in 2560 x 1600 resolution?

Also be aware ....

The HDTV people are complaining and hopping mad about 30" monitors and how BAD the picture looks because HDTV is in 1920 x 1080 resolution, and thus looks like mud on a 30" 2560 x 1600 resolution monitor because there is NO SCALING! They spent thousands on junk for what they really wanted to do because a salesman wanted to make a commission or a "friend" wanted to share his misery.

Do yourself a favor. Go read the reviews on 30" monitors from a Hardware reviewer who is not a lacky for a manufacturer. If the review does not talk about scaling, go find a better reviewer.

Here you go ...

Look at the first enlargement. It is "nearest neighbor interpolation".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_scaling

Now go here -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2xSaI

and you start to see the effect of having advanced scaling helping out your extra large monitor when you have all those extra points waiting for instructions on what to show.

Why 30" monitors don't have scaling (advanced scaling algorithms) built in today is a mystery.

Now look here - http://www.hiend3d.com/hq3x.html

and here - http://www.hiend3d.com/hq4x.html

at even more advanced and accuratre scaling.

The 21" and possibly the 24" LCD monitors have this scaling built in. That's why they look so good these days from any source resolution. What happened to the 30" LCD monitors which we all would want?

Here's the final page of a review on a 30" monitor. Look at the "Con" remark.

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2078207,00.asp

And look at the second paragraph here - http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1907755,00.asp

You're welcome.

Eventually the 30" monitors will have to put in better scaling than interpolation.
