* New Multimeter *

My old multimeter was about 15 yrs old, and pooped out on me. So's I picked up a new Triplett 9000, here's a look see link.
Triplett Test Instruments, Multimeters 9000 9005-A P/N: 9005 Portable use
Anyone have one of these, and what ya think of it?

Re: * New Multimeter *

Hi Skully,

My old multimeter recently failed also (a Radio Shack/Micronta). I'm an analog multimeter kind of person, so I purchased a Triplett 310:

Analog Testers - 310 Series

Very small and portable, and apparently very well built. The one disappointment I've seen so far is its accuracy on ac volts -- it indicates around 100V for my ac line, while the previous cheapo indicated around 124V, which I suspect is a lot closer to the truth.

I prefer analog multimeters because the last time I used a digital one (a good few years ago), I couldn't stand the slow settling time when checking continuity (at least for whatever particular model that was). Perhaps 2 or 3 seconds to see a reading, as opposed to a fraction of a second with an analog meter to be able to tell if the needle is going to swing all the way across. How is yours in that respect?

Regards,
-- Al

Nice! I'm still using an old Radio Shack DMM - gets the job done

So far I've only used it/multimeter for voltages. I haven't gotten around to the other features yet.

Looking at the specs, it appears the continuituy test has an audible beep. I have a Tenma with that feature and it is instant. I would not get a meter without it.

Re: * New Multimeter *

Thanks, Rick. Good to know. Yes, I looked at the manual for Skully's meter and it indicates that the continuity beeper will sound if the resistance is less than "20 to 100 ohms." But I was thinking of the situation where the resistance scale is being used to check continuity, rather than the continuity function itself, so that zero ohm connections can be distinguished from extraneous circuit paths that may be present, that might have resistances in that kind of area (such as the forward resistance through semiconductor junctions). My previous analog meter had a continuity beep mode, but I rarely found myself using it, other than say for checking cables.

Regards,
-- Al
