USB flash drive causes reboot

Lately, my USB flash drive has occasionally caused a reboot.

I thought the flash drive was defective.

Most recently when putting it in, the reboot occured as soon as the outer surround of the drive touched the outer surround of the socket. I'm quite certain it was not inserted.

My present theory is that static electricity is the cause. It's difficult to troubleshoot, since the reboot is random, not every time.

In the future, I plan to touch my finger to the USB socket BEFORE I insert the flash drive. This may bleed off my charge at a slow rate, and avoid reboot.

Anybody else find this occuring?

P.S. I am running an Intel D975XBX2 in an Antec case.

Re: USB flash drive causes reboot

Are you running your computer off a grounded wall socket?

Re: USB flash drive causes reboot

My wall socket is grounded, but I believe that's irrelevant, since the question is whether the USB and I are at the same potential. And I'm not grounded.

It's a potential DIFFERENCE that can cause havoc. If I shuffle my feet across a rug and touch a grounded metal object, I'll feel the discharge.

The front USB connects to the motherboard. Guess I'll have to look at the wiring. But it works fine, as long as it doesn't immediately crash on insertion (acutally just touching of the outside of the plug) of the flash drive. I'm using a SanDisk with a silver-colored cover, so it's probably connected to me when I hold it.

I presume the lower winter time humidity in the house is the cause that I'm so "charged up".

Procure a Mandala, and place the computer upon it...
