A good video converter program?

Ya, so whats all ya'll opinion on a good video converter?

I tried STOIK, and I wasn't too impressed.

I would like a freeware one, but if I really liked on I wouldn't mind paying a little (20, or 30 bucks at most).

I just like something clean looking, and that is stable.

Very few free ones are any good at all. The Stoik isn't bad, but the best is VirtualDub:

A sometimes complex and difficult program to use, but very effective. Note, it will not read wmv or asf files at all do to the author's concerns over copyright issues.

One I particularly like and is very flexible and easy to use is MPEG4 Direct Maker, but it is shareware @ $50 (you can't have everything):

It handles almost any format in or out. And it is one of the fastest converters around in my experience.

I found Xilisoft while trying to make Ipod videos for someone. I really like it.

You guys should try it out.

Link? Free? BTW, if you want a full featured non-linear editor, Adobe has a $30 rebate going on Premier Elements 2 which was just released. Street price is about $85, so after the rebate it is around $55 for a very full featured program. It has about 85% of the features of the full blown version of Premier, and after rebate is only 10% of the cost. All in all a real bargin.

How difficult is Adobe Premier Elements 2 to learn and use? I tried a demo of Sony Vegas once and I couldn't even figure out how to trim a video segment. I dumped it quickly because I'm thickheaded

It's pretty logical. More so than Sony Vegas which I think is hard to use. It also has decent help files. All in all, it is a well designed and inexpensive non-linear video editor with a lot of capabilities for the price.

And, LOL, you are correct, I am an experienced video editor, and it took me forever to figure out how to do a simple clip trim in Vegas. In Premier Elements, you just go down to the frame level, use the scissors tool, cut it where you want and delete the part of the clip that you want gone. Then delete the empty time segment. Done. Much like the way it is done in ULead's MediaStudio Pro.
