HD DVD is officially dead

All of the rumors from last week have been proven out. Toshiba published the press release this morning:

http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/ir/en...0080219_03.htm

They did a masteful job of staying in the game as long as they did...and produced a great product at a great price. From a consumer perspective, I'm looking forward to buying lots more discs at closeout prices!

HD-DVD players still have some life left in them...the HD-DVD players still do a very good job of upconverting standard DVD's especially in comparison to standard DVD upconverters...I hear the PS3 does not do a good of as job at upconverting as the standalone HD-DVD players

I can see Toshiba focusing on this aspect of the players and succeeding in selling a lot of their inventory...I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of people continue to buy HD-DVD players since the vast majority of consumers are still using standard DVD's...the real format war now begins---Blu-Ray vs standard DVD's

Re: HD DVD is officially dead

I really had no issues with both ... all the HD-DVDs I own were excellent on the Xbox HD-DVD Player. Blu-ray was also nice. I was totally indifferent.

Man...I still haven't recovered from seeing the difference between my old Sony WEGA 32" standard-def and my new 32" Sharp Aquos HDTV.

conspiracy theories shared by director Michael Bay...

Michael Bay, director of action blockbusters such as Transformers, accused Microsoft of sabotaging both high-definition disc formats. More specifically, according to Bay, Microsoft chose HD DVD to intentionally confuse the customer into giving up both optical formats for digital downloads – which Microsoft sells on its Xbox Live Video Marketplace.

“What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads,” wrote Bay. “That is the dirty secret no one is talking about.”
