Similar situation here. The downloaded music (before I recorded all my own CDs) were mostly downloaded at 120KB/s or so (about 8GB worth). Some higher, but not much. Back then, when I first got into it, I didn't know better. A co-worker said that 120KB/s was fine for CD quality and I believed him. After having trouble when I took those lower quality bitrates to make audio CDs, I realized the problem and only go for the highest bit rate I can find now. I'll spend the extra hdd space for a quality recording. Hdd space is cheap nowadays, so its worth it.

4444 total MP3 files... about 3/4 ripped from my own disks.
Total 40GB

All get robocopied across my network to a cheap 80GB drive on my wife's PC...
Most all of it electronic - psytrance or psy ambient with a little tribal beat stuff thrown in for good measure!

Every new CD I buy gets ripped and placed on my back shelf to remain as my master disk.

BUT, I've been slacking and still have about 30 - 40 disks I need to rip.

So much music to listen to... so little time!

I have 108 burned CD's of Full Albums in MP3 format (VBR) and that is about between 850 and 870 Full Albums. I also have 10 burned CD's of mixed songs also in MP3 format. I am ripping everything that I can get a hold on and keep it for later use.

I don't download any music anymore from Winmx, Kazaa or else, I have all the music that I want lucky me and I'm still adding new songs to my collection everyday...

It took me awhile to have that collection of songs but it's a great joy for me. I have a 80 Gig Maxtor with my MP3's on it and once I tried to install Mandrake 8.2 and without knowing what I was doing I format by mistake both HD that I have (110 Gig total) so I had to re-install everything including all my music....took me 3 days to get close to where I was when I made the mistake....

Enjoy your music and cheers

Wow this is an impressive list..

I had 7 gigs of mp3s in the napster days, My HD got hosed.

Then I had 2 gigs and my HD got hosed

Now I have 1 gig, and I don't find a lot of new music that I like anynmore.

But I have about 7 gigs of vids.

Have no use for MP3's. I have over 1200 cds, at peak I owned over 2000. The sound quality of mp3's is dismal compared to cd and I have yet to have to replace one cd for any reason. Can't say that for my computer hard drives though....

38.0KB

yes, that's right, 38KB of mp3 file. that's the file come alone with winamp2 -- demo.mp3

i listen mp3s online only, finding no points to let those junk MP3 files take up my HDD space.

The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

That's an amazing collection. In my old days I had over 500 LP's, but I lost them all together with everything else I owned in a fire a couple of years ago. Wasn't very pretty.

Red face MP3's

I only have about 10MB worth of MP3's but have over 10GB (1,100 tracks) copied from CD into WMA format at 192 bits/sec and it will probably triple when I copy the rest of my collection. I only get MP3's if they are rare or exclusive music tracks and anywhay the size is not a problem with a 80GB hard drive.
