Sick Sound

My on-board sound has lost lots of volume in both channels for sound from the optical drive. Other sound sources are OK.

Motherboard: Intel D975XBX2
Software: Intel Audio Studio
CPU 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo
Optical Drive: Pioneer DVR-111DBK

I've disconnected and reconnected all cables.
I've installed another identical optical drive, with no change.

There is NO signal connection from the optical drive to the motherboard, except what must go through the IDE cable.

I have a second identical computer with sound that still works OK, so comparing sound of the two systems gives me confidence about the above information.

Any ideas before I give up and buy a sound card?

Re: Sick Sound

Have you double clicked on your speaker icon to bring up the mixer and made sure your CD Player volume hasn't been lowered somehow?

Re: Sick Sound

I have compared the Intel Audio Studio settings with those on the other computer. All are the same. And when I play the IAS test tracks, both computers have the same volume.

I've also replaced the IDE cable. No joy -- the optical drive sound is 6 to 10 dB down on the problem computer.

Did you try switching cables between computers?

Re: Sick Sound

Could be a short as well. Check out the board and see if you noticed anything weird in the connections for the drive. A bent pin or something.

Re: Sick Sound

Thanks, I've tried those ideas.

And I just tried the front panel outputs, which come off a different audio output connector on the motherboard. Same result -- equal volume for Intel Audio Studio test sound, but much weaker for optical drive sourced sound on the problem computer.

Evidently there is some problem on the motherboard where the optical drive input signal arrives. And I don't know where that is, but it's evidently from an IDE cable pin.
