As I was looking around I found out that Avid, a popular and very well respected company that makes big buck editing and other non-linear software has a free DV editor. Not sure what you get for free, but if you have nothing, it might be worth a look.

Just for curiosity- can Windows Movie Maker be used to encode raw avi files to a compressed format like mpeg? How does it compare with Virtualdub?

Not sure about Movie Maker, don't use it myself, but you can probably get all the info you need about it HERE. VirtualDub is primarily a capture program that has basic editing features and tools to help find bad frames and stuff like that. It produces AVI files. To get to MPEG, you need an encoder like the previously mentioned TMPGEnc.

| Using my Leadtek WinFast TV card, I use the WinFast software to capture the TV programs in DVD format. I then edit it in TMPGEnc DVD Author.

TMPGEnc DVD Author is a decent disc authoring program for the price. I have UleadMovieFactory2, which is good for beginners, but very basic. NeroVision Express 3 came with the Nero6 upgrade I had to purchase when I got my NEC 3500AG, but I don't have very high expectations for it. In a previous post I mentioned Avid Free DV. I checked it out. It is a basic editor with two timelines and about a dozen transitions. 46MB free download, all you have to do is register. The catch, you ask? It will only import from a DV source and only output back to the DV source or produce Quicktime movie files, so it would not be something that would help here.
