Liver not included with purchase

I just ordered a 13" Macbook Pro. 2.53 Gigglehertz. They say it will be here in two weeks, I guess they rickshaw it over from China (ah stereotypes, I love you).

Seems like a nice piece of kit. Unfortunately the 8GB upgrade was insanely expensive (we're talking $1200 in US funny money) so 4GB will have to do for now. Who knew DDR3 SO-DIMMs were more expensive than the equivalent weight in gold/platinum/highly enriched uranium.

I guess I have to start being smug now.

Re: Liver not included with purchase

Thanks guys.

I was really surprised with how freaking expensive a 4GB stick of SO-DIMM DDR3 was. It's a factor 10 compared to the 2GB sticks here in Sweden. There ought to be laws against that.

I'm also planning on throwing in a SSD drive in a year or so, when the ones >200GB don't cost an arm and a leg.

I love my Unibody MacBook - I'm also going to get SSD when the price for a 300GB drive is within sane levels. I think that will be sometime in Q4 2010.

What happened to the edit button? Anyways, did you pay Apple for the RAM upgrade or order your own? I got my 4GB kit from Newegg for *i think* about $150.

4GB is actually the base level of memory for the 13" Macbook Pro, at least for the 2.53GHz model. I would never use Apple's upgrade path for memory, the markup is insane compared to buying e.g. some nice Crucial memory. (Even though two 4GB sticks bought from someone not Apple would be disgustingly expensive, Apple tacks on an additional 50% on top of that in the Apple store. Makes one want to use the liver-themed "The gall!" exclamation.)

Status update: it's on some UPS plane between Shanghai and Cologne right now. Estimated time of delivery is Monday or Tuesday. I'm in total giddy schoolgirl mode, hair in the up-right and braided position.

Re: Liver not included with purchase

I got it on Monday but haven't had much time to play with it due to a medical emergency with my dad.

But the time I have had with it has left me mightily impressed. Seriously, it's beautifully put together, the fan has been inaudible during the hours I've played with it which is sublime (even just surfing will send my parents' laptop's fan, attached to a 1GHz slower CPU, through several loud whir-fests). The return from sleep is almost instantaneous. The build quality is just superb. And it looks just great.

Seriously, I find it hard to believe there are many competitors to this little machine. It's more expensive, yes, but right now I feel it's pretty much worth it. In this case, it's not hype.
