Best Codec Pack for XP?

I did a fresh install of XP on my new rig. Need codecs for popular audio and video formats.
Which codec pack has the best coverage and the least junk? Thanks.

Re: Best Codec Pack for XP?

I always used Nimo Codec Pack when I ran XP. Was able to play anything I ran across. Never had any problems.

Re: Best Codec Pack for XP?

I've been using the Klite codec pack (mostly Standard, sometimes Deluxe if there's something that won't work.) However, I have not investigated other codec packs. I love the Media Player Classic that comes with Klite, I have it handle all my video files.

A quick search says this pack hasn't been updated since 2004 if I'm reading things right. link

There was one other update. I never noticed the date but it was not much newer. Still never had an issue with it. I last used the one you linked to.

Re: Best Codec Pack for XP?

Just downloaded the standard. Will uninstall all my old codecs first. It'd be great to be happy with one pack. Thanks polonyc2!

Re: Best Codec Pack for XP?

I've been using K-Lite also. It works great and I haven't ran into any files that don't work yet.

Re: Best Codec Pack for XP?

Thanks everyone. I'll give K-Lite a try. I already installed Media Player Classic via "Real Alternative".

Re: Best Codec Pack for XP?

I'm using the VLC media player - Overview. It plays everything, except perhaps Real Media. You won't have to install any codecs at all. This player easily provides the "best coverage and the least junk".
