Excel And Word....Can the layout and preferences used all be saved ??

Can i save my user preferences. Options chosen. Tool bar settings, Colors and layout etc be saved to a sort of a user file so that if i have to reinstall Excel or Word i can use this file in some way to recreate the way i had excel setup initially.

Or maybe theres a folder somewhere where Excel saves its layout and other settings ? If i can copy out this file i will be saved a lot of trouble with a fresh install.

Thanks

Yes. For Office 2002, which I use, it's under Start/All Programs/Microsoft Office Tools/Save My Settings Wizard. I've used it successfully.

The same "wizard" exists in Office 2003 and Office XP as well.

Re: Excel And Word....Can the layout and preferences used all be saved ??

I have MS Office 2007. And in Start > Programs > Ms Office > MS Office Tools > Theres only a Diagnostics program listed. Perhaps i didnt install the needed module, because installing all the modules under the MS office installation creates a hell of a lot of problems. Especially since i have a lot of programs that interact with each other. Mainly my PDA which syncs with my excel files that i carry on my palm unit. Photos on the palm are synced with My Documents on my computer etc.

I found (thru a lot of trial and error) that installing all or most of the modules under the MS Office installer creates havoc and keeps blocking my hotsyncs and doing other funny things to other programs etc. So last time ive just freshly installed only the EXCEL, POWERPOINT and WORD modules. Then i found that when id fire up WORD it would always first display an error saying macro has been called / needs to run macro scripts etc. It was annoying. I found that i had to use the Office Installer and install the VBA module which enables Visual Basic For Applications. Once that was done everything was normal.

Now if you can guide me which particular module you think might be needed to run this wizard, that would help me very much. Thanks a lot.

Re: Excel And Word....Can the layout and preferences used all be saved ??

Hi Guys,

I did some reading on google and found that the 'Save My Settings Wizard' doesnt exist in Office 2007 WOW Microsoft. It was officially not included in the package. What morons !. There is no particular wizard included that does this for MS Office 2007. They suggest using the USER STATE MIGRATION TOOL 3.0 which incidentally will also copy all other settings of your desktop, colors, themes etc etc and a lot of rubbish you dont need too. However i decided to download it and was shocked to see its not even an applet or program. Its invisible in its install and then we have to use the command line interface to enter loads of syntax that looked like some secret codes. And ran for pages. And they expect average computer users to do this to migrate their settings. Some lunatic artist took over this project at MS and decided to paint his masterpiece.

Re: Excel And Word....Can the layout and preferences used all be saved ??

I found that you can save at least the tool bar settings. Which happen to be the most confusing to set up. At least with Office 2007.

Solution.....
Go to C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft
and copy out the folder titled 'Office'. It has the files which make up your toolbar settings. Just copying them out to a safe place and putting them back in the afore mentioned locoation in a new install will ensure the toolbar layout is restored.
