exchange programs

i think that's right? hey guy's i need your help. i need to exchange my daughter in-law computer to another one. all her programs,and the hard drive.

she uses it for work. so i don't have a lot of room for error.

can someone get me started in the right direction.

i leave at that for now to hear how i should start.

You might try removing all drivers before last shutdown. Make sure it is a clean removal. Look in the properties drop down for each device (vid, sound, network, modem etc.) make note of drivers. After uninstalling each one do a search for each file and delete them manually. This last part, after removing any from the "add/remove" also. In this way once you transfer hdd to new pc it boot properly and allow for installing of drivers for devices in that pc.
There are softwares out there that do "clean" removal of drivers. However, it can be risky if you are not totally sure of what you are doing. You do not want to damage registry and other critical installations.

thanks what about the software? were she has programs running with info, on there she would'nt want to loose.

Cloning or an image copy is the only other course. I have done this in the past with great sucess although not with XP just with w2k. With XP expect you may have to re register XP also office if they use a newer version.

What TAPIR is suggesting essentially is to physically relocate the old hd to the new system ( swapping) drives. Now you have to have install the drivers for the new system on the old HD.

The other way is just a lot of work. Re install all the software on the new system move the data over , myfavorites any outlook emails and calendars via pst, pab. Then test and look for bits and pieces you may have missed.
Although there is a MS utility to make moving from one system to another via a network connection a little easier. Never used just know it's there.

Don't get rid of the old PC till everything is verified or take a backup with Acronis or Ghost.
