So I figured out how to make the settings stick. I had to manually edit the user.js file. It kept my settings after a restart of FF.

Thanks Kongo---

Two ways to stop animated ads!

Thanks to kONGO, I discovered that to stop all animated .GIFs you just press the escape key. You can also permanently stop animated .GIFs as explained here:

Quote:
Go to the page about:config and locate the key image.animation_mode. set its value to ‘none’ to stop all animated gifs !
To stop animated Flash objects, use the FlashBlock extension. Apparently AdBlock will do this now, but FlashBlock is more flexible. FlashBlock replaces all Flash objects with a play button. If you want to see the Flash, click the play button. FlashBlock will allow you to put certain sites in its exception list where it will always play Flash (for example, www.homestarrunner.com )

Yeah, I like being able to stop annoying animated GIFs. In IE it was always possible to press the stop button and that would take care of it, but the stop button is disabled in FF. Esc is your friend, in any case.

These configuration settings seem to speed up page loading with my SBC DSL.
Newbie with Firefox, working my way through all the options. Got Spellbound, ieview and Tabbrowser Preferences extentions for starters.

ronbo, there's also an extension called "Tweak Network Settings" that does what you linked to above.

Ok guys.. I use the Spellbound extension, and it's a great idea. However, its dictionary is severely lacking vocabulary, ebonics, slang, etc.

Does anyone know a way I can rip microsofts dictionary out of word and import into SB extension?

Got another issue, between FF and Logitech iTouch software:

When you program keyboard soft keys with a menu of Web sites, and IE is the default browser, the software works fine. That is, if I choose ABXZone from a list of sites I've programmed as an iTouch menu item, the site opens fine in IE. But when I set FF as my system default browser, those sites don't open at all. It's like the URL is not being handed off to the browser properly.

Anyone else experience this, or know of some registry settings I can mess with to get it working? I have a zillion site menus set up with iTouch....

In the ITouch configuration box. Instead of choosing a "web site", choose "program" and then enter the path as C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe www.abxzone.com
Make certain you have a space between the end of firefox.exe and the start of the web page address.

Thanks Garnet! Works like a charm!

Wonder why it didn't work as expected without doing that?

Firefox and HOSTS File Manager

Hmm...I just learned of a neat feature HOSTS File Manager has. In IE, it will add two entries to your "Links" toolbar. One is to call up the HOSTS File Manager program itself, the other is to add a URL to the HOSTS file, thereby blocking it.

Now that would be very useful - don't you hate that when you mistype a URL and get directed to one of those shyster sites? Try www.abitusa.com for example.

The problem is, both these "Links" commands are actually program shortcuts rather than URLs. For example, the add URL button points to "C:\Program Files\HOSTS File Manager\Add URL.exe". You can't add these to the Firefox Bookmarks. If you do, it will "download" the program from your computer to your computer.

Is there any way to add custom shortcuts to a Firefox toolbar?

I can put shortcuts there by dragging them to the bookmarks toolbar. I figured this out when I accidentally did that today.
