Ghost 2003 boot from CD !

Here's how to do an image restore without a floppy!

go to your c:\program files\symantec\norton ghost 2003 folder and find ghost.exe.... copy this to a blank cdr.

Boot your system from your norton systemworks install disc and select dos 6.2 (with cdrom support)
put your new cd in your drive

go to the c: drive (this will be your cdrom)
type ghost

the program will start
you won't have a mouse, so you have to navigate in the prog using the tab key.

select "local" and follow the prompts to get to your ghost partition and choose your image

I'm going to try and make a bootable cd with the files on it next... I'll get back to you! :wave2:

another way...

Use the Ghost Boot Diskette wizzard to make a bootable floppy with the support you need (including mouse). Then use Nero to burn a bootable CD based on the diskette.

That is what I've done with my Partition Magic, PQ Deploy Center, Ghost, and even my DOS boot diskette with Network support.

Floppy? I don't want to go on a rant here, but I have 3 of them in different systems in the house.... not one of them will make a boot disc that will actually boot a machine... (brand new discs, so it's not them, and I've tried in norton as well as the format system disc dialog in XP) and I know that a floppy drive is only $15.... I aint gonna bother spending money to make one more of the useless unreliable pieces of junk that always seem to fail when I need them... All three of them will be in the trash by morning....good riddance

OOOPS I went on a rant ...sorry guys

sorry to hear of your difficulties with diskette drives. I have 6 systems (4 desktops + 2 laptops)... all the desktops have floppy drives, the one laptop has a floppy that can be either internal or external, and the other laptop has a USB floppy. All work fine to make bootable diskettes from DOS, Win9x, or the boot diskette wizzards with PMagic, Ghost, etc. But I haven't tried making a "bootable" diskette from in WXP's format the diskette. sorry I got off track a little there

Might I suggest trying a virtual floppy drive program then? like... http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd.html Use the Ghost2k3 boot diskette wizzard to make the "floppy disk" to the virtual floppy drive that program creates, then make the bootable CD off that? Seems like much less work then what you are going through.

I mean, I don't see how you are going be successfull in making a"dos bootable" CD to run Ghost.exe other than having a bootable DOS diskette (real or virutal) in the first place.

I suggest finding someone who is a floppy "expert" to make one for you.

Your gremblins will hopefully not interfere.

BTW the main reason I posted this was I found a lot of threads on the web with people asking how to re-image their systems after a crash, and they either didn't have a ghost boot floppy or it didn't work.... Or they don't have a floppy in their system...
I found nuthing...nadda zip... about restoring a drive without a floppy.... just a lot of helpful people saying "get a floppy"

so... If you have ghost on your system and an image somewhere... If you copy ghost.exe to a cd.... you can relax knowing that you can fix your system a year from now. Or a friends new one that didn't come with a floppy.

Just so you know, I run Ghost 2001 and Ghost 2003 from a floppy. If I change or add a driver I can just copy it to the floppy and Ghost will recognize the new NIC or whatever.

But I have never had a floppy boot disk fail. Not even one. That's why I suggested find a floppy "expert". I'll define that for the moment as one who shows you a floppy actually booting on a machine and then gives you that floppy to take with you to try on your computer. Then you would know if the problem was hardware related if it didn't work.

Having just gone through an ordeal with a defunct floppy, I learned you can in fact use the Norton2003 CD to boot from and to restore your image. It worked for me restoring from an image stored on an external HDD.

I used the last of my cdr's slipstreaming sp1 and sp2 I wanted to compare the differences between the two service packs on a clean install( I used nlite to get it down to a reasonable size... I also did a bit of experimenting so I made a few coasters LOL)
I'll get some more discs next weekend and let you know how I do.
BTW I downloaded the vitual floppy and it works as stated.... I was pleasantly suprised to see it didn't conflict with daemon tools.

OK, I finally got back to this one, I had to get the boot files from 98... the ones from XP (using the system format "a" on a machine with a floppy) just plain don't work on a cd..
so, I copied the files ghost.exe, mouse.com and mouse.ini into my virtual drive along with the 98 boot files, made a couple of changes to the autoexec, burned it with nero and then made a bootable iso...
now if I could only get Ghost to read an image saved to the same disk ...
Is there any way of getting ghost to recognize an image copied to a bootable cd or dvd?
