Question Need New Back-up Software!!!!!

Hi all,

Ghost 2003 simply will not back a SATA HDD to another SATA HDD at all.

I need something besides Symantec software. It needs to be able operate in a non-Windows environment, preferably some type of DOS mode.

Thanks,
NBK

See this thread, which I believe mentions pretty much all of the available programs:

I do that regularly from a Ghost 2003 (or is it 2004?) floppy. Maybe that feature was introduced in 2004...

I back up with Ghost 2003 all the time from a SATA HD to a SATA HD. I never use windows to back up with Ghost (any version), never, never, ever. Only DOS. Using any windows with any imaging is only asking for additional possible problems in my book.

PeterT, Ghost 2003 has that capability.

Agreed 100%. Admittedly, imaging a Windows partition while running within that Windows will probably work most of the time with some programs. But that's not good enough, particularly because it may not be apparent that there is a problem until it's too late -- when a restored image doesn't work. An imaging program has to be able to be counted on 100% of the time, in my book as well.

IIRC Ghost 2003 needs to be updated before it will do a sata backup.

Did you also create a new floppy boot disk?

I think mine "wore out" at one time a while ago. New floppy and new files on the floppy and all was fine again.

I notice you have a 750 gig HD. Is that the one you're having problems with?

hi traveler,

I am reluctant to try again after having to do a clean install.

I was trying to back-up to the 250Gb HDD from the 500Gb HDD. I was using the floppy disk which would freeze giving me no opportunity to choose a HDD to back up to.

Thanks
NBK

Re: Need New Back-up Software!!!!!

I also use Ghost 2003 to back up my OS 150GB SATA Raptor to a SATA 160GB WD drive. No problems. I actually converted the Ghost boot floppy to a bootable CD, which loads Ghost MUCH faster and doesn't wear out the way floppies do. Perhaps there is an issue with the size of the drives Ghost 2003 can handle, but the issue isn't the fact that they are SATA. I always do clones... I've had some issues when I've done images (especially when using any sort of compression).

Hi PGIV,

How do use Ghost 2003 to make a bootable Ghost CD?

I am still leaning toward Acronis...

Thanks

Boy I'd download the demo and make sure all needed functions work on your hardware. I use TI 11 and on the rig in my sig I had to get a special ISO from Acronis to get TI 11 boot disk to even boot. I also made a UBCD4WIN boot disk with the TI 11 plugin. This disk has worked on every system I have tried it on so far.
