OCR programs? Freeware?

Microsoft Word used to come with an OCR program but it doesn't anymore. Does anyone know of a good OCR program that is hopefully freeware or at least affordable ($10-$30)?

I can operate either in Mac OS or in Windows...

I thought there used to be an Adobe OCR program that worked well but I couldn't locate it online.

Re: OCR programs? Freeware?

Scanners commonly come with free ocr programs. I am not aware of any that are separately available and low cost or free, although there certainly may be some.

But another alternative would be to scan in as a pdf, and then convert the pdf to an editable text format, such as .doc, using DeskUnPDF from Docudesk, PDF Converter and PDF Creator Software by Docudesk.

I have some experience with DeskUnPDF, and it usually works well. Occasionally it will mistake text for a jpg, especially if the text is within a box or some comparably delimited area.

You may find it and its companion pdf converter program to be also useful in situations where pdf's require editing.

Hope that helps,
-- Al
