Question Using Norton Speed Disk to defrag

When I use Norton Speed Disk on the old computer's c drive, it will put the windows swap file (win386.swp) at the beginning of the disk (9G of data on 10G disk). However, when I use Norton Speed Disk on the new computer's c drive, it puts the swap file at the end of the data files (4G of data on 40G disk). Both computers are running win98se and both have the same settings for Speed Disk. Am I missing something here? What is the story here? I would like the swap file to go to the beginning of the disk. (or is there a better way?)

You can specify this in the Options/settings. I always set "Folders First" and under "Files First" I put the Win386.swp. It then moves the swap file to the front of the drive.

On your old computer you probably had your swap file set to a fixed size. When you do this, Speed Disk will put it at the beginning since it won't be changing size all the time. This helps to increase performance. On your new computer I'd guess that you haven't specified a fixed swap file size and therefore Speed Disk is placing it at the end of the disk in order to leave room for the file to expand.

Thanks for your replies.

Keri: My settings are as you described. I even retyped the file name win386.swp to make sure I got it right. The files defrag and sort with apps first, folders second, the rest next, the swap file last, infrequently used files at back of disk.

Dalamith: Both computers let windows manage the virtual memory. I just checked the control panel|system|performance.

There has got to be something that is being overlooked.

Are you pointing it to the exact location of win386.swp? Use the browse button if not to make sure it is finding it. Hope this helps.

Of all the wild software packages I have tried- Shareware, Scareware, Gougeware or otherwise: NONE have ever done the damage that Norton Utilities has done. Speeddisk is absolutely the fastest and easiest way to corrupt my drive.

Good luck to you though.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Thousands of people (Myself included) use it without problems. There are isolated instances though where any program can cause failures. Not always the programs fault though.

Again, Sorry to hear you had a bad experience.

Thanks for your reply.

A funny thing is that the "Files First" section is totally blank on the old computer. Yet even though windows grows the swap file and I see it partly at the beginning and partly at the end on the disk map, Speed Disk will move the whole file to the beginning. Why won't you do the same New Computer?

Well

Have you ever run the Norton Optimization Wizard (on the same menu as SpeedDisk)which actually places your swap file up front (it also compacts your registry). If you had, then maybe SpeedDisk reads those settings and determined whether it will put your swap file up front or in the back.

I have been using Norton ever since it was Norton Utilities v1.0 for DOS through the current version. I also see CONSTANT bashing of the products. I have never had a problem from SpeedDisk on my 286-16, 386-33, 486-66, Pentium-S 133, Pentium II-450 or my current Pentium III-1GHZ. While I expect that others have had problems, this is a long chain of luck for me.

EUREKA!!!

That was it! I now vaguely remember running the Optimization Wizard a long time ago on the old computer. It even says it will put the swap file first.

Thanks a heap, jdmpa.

Cool Beenz! Glad you got it figured out! Knew it had to be something simple.

Sorry Traveler, shouldnt have stuck my nose in. This guy was looking for help and I offered none!

Guess we all have a piece of software or hardware we have sworn off of.

I must admit, in the old days of DOS and early windows, I swore by Norton. Now, I just swear at it.

Good luck to all.

Rafael:

There are a few things the Norton stuff just doesn't quite catch. If you saw my post in the Intel chips forum, you would have seen my comments on how Norton blew the diagnostic readings on my chip cache. One member however pointed to the Intel chip utility at the Intel website. I downloaded it and sure enough it diagnosed my chip and the readings were what they should be.

But Speed Disk! What else would you suggest?
