Question Linux on Apple???

I will soon be purchasing a old Powerbook G3, Is it possible to run Windows XP on this notebook? I know this sounds crazy but I really dont feel like buying
OS X, and all I want this notebook for is surfing the web and instant messenger. Or would Red Hat be a possible solution? any and all input is much appreciated.

I don't think it would work. I am not really that familiar with Apple but it is so proprietary and so specifically made with Apple's OS in mind, I don't think Windows XP would even recognize any of the hardware.

But I was wrong once, so if anyone else can add any input?

There is at least one version of Linux for the Apple, not sure how good it is at all, not being much of either an Apple or Linux expert for sure. Here:

The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

Well, you can run OS X (not talking about Darwin) through an emulator on an x86 proc but I'm not sure if someone out there has done that the other way around.

Why not use OS X, it's BSD based whereas Linux is not.

Yes, using Virtual PC 6.1. I had one of our Apple notebooks at our office running win XP using Virtual PC. It seemed to be just like running it on a PC.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/applications/virtualpc/

You do need OS X for it, though, and it's gonna cost you (unless you 'stumble upon' it.) I read it runs XP nicely.

Slooooower than Garnet I see. Ah well.

Hi all,

I hate to say it, but if you emulate Windows XP under Mac OS X on a G3 laptop, well... You're going to die. Like seriously. They'll find your corpse twisted between making the ctrl-alt-delete and ctrl-apple button-esc key combinations after notepad stalls out for the kajillionth time.

if I were you I would go with yellow dog linux, available here:
http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/

I've had a little bit of experiance with it, and always found it easy to use. It's a solid, polished product, and it has excellent hardware compatablity.

No, neither run under Linux. There are other alternatives, but one of the Linux experts will have to give you more info on those security issues. You might want to check out the Linux threads here for a lot more info on Linux itself. If you want I can move this thread over to the Linux Forum and change the title for you to asking about Linux on an Apple.
