| Linux Mandrake has built in support for ntfs, the bootloader for Mandrake also recognizes ntfs partitions which makes it easy to setup a linux/xp dual boot. (redhat will only do this properly if you have the xp drive formated as fat). Also, be aware that the ntfs support in mandrake is read only. I believe RW support for ntfs has not been implemented yet in the linux kernel HTH nick

| Write is in the kernel but is not implemented by any distro. You will either have to enable it by installing the module or selecting the option in the kernel config and compiling the kernel. I don't know which off the top of my head. The reason writes are not supported by distros is because ntfs is expermental and is not completely stable. Chances are if you enable it, it will work fine, but there might be a chance that it will fail and screw the whole partition. NTFS is a closed file system, so it is reversed engineered as best as possible. Last edited by barureddy; 07-09-2003 at 11:52 PM.. |

| Red Hat Linux will set up a dual boot system with Windows XP installed on an NTFS partition. I know this works if you use GRUB as the boot loader, but I'm not sure about LILO. GRUB is the default with Red Hat 9. Barureddy is right about NTFS Write Support. Enabling it will likely destroy the file system. I haven't heard about much progress with write support, but read support works. I have posted a link to the Linux NTFS project. You may want to check it out: http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/ If you need to share data between Windows and Linux, the best way is to create a FAT or FAT32 partition. FAT and FAT32 are the only two file systems that Windows XP and Linux can read without any additional drivers. |

Using this set up obviates the need to set up a FAT or FAT32 partition. HTH Martin | |
