The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

SuSE 9.3 gives me a graphics problem with my nVidia card so I'm not surprised.

For some odd reason SuSE 9.3 moves the display about 1" to the left. Using SAX2 I reposition the display only to get what on my reboot? XTerm session for logging in which thereby starts up KDE. Solaris 10 gives me less problems than SuSE 9.3 with this card. Does not matter if I use nVidia drivers or not. Normally, I thought you had to wait for SuSE to provide the drivers for a higher rate in getting the drivers to work. Otherwise, you might have to change some settings manually (like nVidia requires from you if you don't use the SuSE download).

The Suse drivers works just fine for me. Easy install when you follow their readme to the letter. I have 3d acceleration with my X800XL.

No, I got my X800XL working with the SuSE included drivers before, worked right out of the box. Your X850 was released after SuSE finished the development for 9.3 and therefore it was not included.

Yes, SuSE still has their own version of the ATI drivers and they should support your card.

What do you mean?
I seem to be extremly lucky with SuSE, I have not seen most of the issues others have, SuSE must really like me. Not even my Canon scanner is a problem.

Just a hint, before you start installing the SuSE drivers check for the latest updates. There is a new kernel update out. It's already in Apt, along with some more updates.

Try changing the frame buffer.
Just add vga=x to you grub menu.lst.
Here is mine,

Your problem hasn't much to do with the ATI driver, because X hasn't loaded at that stage and is not yet active. It is the interaction between your monitor and your card, you simply get a very low resolution and maybe only 256color. Try playing with the frame buffer till you have a decent looking display.
That problem usually happens only with LCD monitors that use the DVI connection.
