| 4 CPUs on a server one dies Server expert needed Hello all! My question is today at work a server went down 10:20A.M. (Dell 6500 something) and someone diagnosed it as a bad motherboard. The server has 4 CPUs and 2 VRM (Voltage regulator modules). So this is a critical business cant go on server running our ERP and our Web page ties into it to allow students to search courses check grades etc. (we are an edu) So the board comes in at 4:PM and it gets replaced and the tech goes to start it up and it is a no go. So it had the same issue after mostly all new components are placed inside. Wrong diagnosis is what I think. My question is whether it is possible to run a server with 3 CPUs although it is designed for four and also if the added VRM which would expect to see 2 loads allow it to even work with one out? Is it a bank concept? I have never seen a server with an odd amount of CPUs always either a single only or an even 2,4,8 etc. Does that sound correct or anyone ever expereince a similar scenario? Everything is up and running now but it took from 10:20AM till 9PM I was interested in who diagnosed the board as bad since it has redundancy, we could of been up and running with two is what methinks
