How to add a new partition to existing partitioned HDD ?

I have 3 partitions on my laptop HDD as C,D & E.
I want to have an extra partition F: how can i do this without having to reinstall windows ?
Can i go into computer management and in disk management right click and format and select a smaller partition size than the current one so i can fomat the balance as a fresh partition,,, is this possible ?

Or do i use the os disk and format E: and then id have a raw disk which i can split into 2 partitions ?

You require a disk management tool like Acronis Disk Director or Partition Magic to "unallocate" free space from other existing partitions and use it to create the additional partition.

Hi Plainman,

Windows disk management obviously cannot do anything affecting the size of its own partition. You would need a third-party tool, such as the ones Cyclops mentioned (which are not free), or GParted, GParted -- Welcome, which is free and well regarded, but is slightly less user friendly, imo.

However, if you can accomplish what you want by simply splitting one of the other partitions into two pieces, you can do that with Windows disk management. Just move all of the data on that partition which you want to keep to another partition or drive, then delete the partition, and then create two new ones. Right-clicking on the pictorial representation of the partition in Windows disk management will give you the option to delete it, and right-clicking on the free space which will then appear there will give you the option to create a new partition, with size that you specify. Once that is done, you would then create another partition in the remaining free space.

Regards,
-- Al

Hi Ctal, Your second suggestion is exactly what i was looking to doing. Thanks again.

Meanwhile i have been wanting to ask...why is my quick reply window just the size of a matchbox ? Bug ? Its way too tiny so i have to click GO ADVANCED to get the normal sized box.

Hi Plainman,

Glad the partitioning worked out ok. Re the quick reply window, I suppose the theory is that a "quick reply" will be a short reply. On my 19 inch 1280 x 1024 monitor, the box is about 5.5 x 1.25 inches, which I guess is within reason for a "quick reply."

Re: How to add a new partition to existing partitioned HDD ?

Hi....

Thanks for your idea. I will format it just that way.

I agree. It was just that i noticed the small box version was introduced just a short while ago. I thought it was an error with my browser . But actually on a side note its just 1.5 inch x 1.5 inch (square) on my 1280x 768 widescreen monitor. A little too small to even type anything with confidence.

Do you have a website Ctal , on your video editing and stuff, about your work, let me know as id love to see it ?

No, most of it is for a program my wife has on our local "public access" cable tv channel, in which she interviews local politicians and public officials. It's not "work" in the sense of being income producing, but it's something we have fun doing, and which seems to be in a good cause.
