How do I make a Bootable W98SE CD?

Well, my Windows 98SE CD has become so bad that now, it's unbootable and I can't even attempt to make a copy of it without having some kind of reading errors. All I have now are two directories, mainly Win98 and Plus98 (which I copied to my HD long time ago), how can/do I make a good bootable Windows 98SE CD from just these two directories? Is it even possible at this stage? Thanks to all of you experts out there. I know I will get some very good advice.

Hello there.

It is extremely simple and important to have a bootable cd.

To create a bootble CD,you need to have a bootable FLOPPY.

Here is the procedure to create a bootable FLOPPY :
1. start>settings>control panel>add\remove programs.
2. A window will appear.Somewhere on the top there is a button like this
"setup disk".
3.Follow the steps and bootable floppy is ready.

All the toil is done and rest is a piece of cake.

Run any version of NERO and there is an option to create bootable CD.

This should do it.

That creates an emergency boot disk. Not a win98se boot cd with all the drivers etc.

I think you will need a new original cd

Hmmmm....then I may be out of luck? Perhaps it's time for a new CD or just abandon 98SE forever. It's still useful in some ways so it's kind of hard to abandon it completely.

Another way is copying the whole Win98 into a directory in another partition.

Then, you can boot up with either the bootable floppy, or boot up to the primary partition which has been formatted and made bootable by transferring Windows systems (basically DOS). Then, just switch to the partition where the Win98 directory is, and install directly from hard disk.

This is my favorite way of installing Win98. Definitely faster than from CD.

To make bootable diskette just format a diskette like you would normally. Put a blank diskette in the "a:" drive and right click and select format when the windows pops up select full and check the box copy system files.

You will use this as the basis for copying the boot file to the cd.

The alternative is go to microsoft and download the win98se boot diskette.

Another alternative is to go to www.bootdisk.com

Bart's site for barts pe has utility that may as well help in the creation of a win98 boot cd.

If you have a legal copy of win98 (that is damaged) and a legal Product Key I see no reason why you cant borrow a copy from a friend and copy it

The problem is, I have no friends who has it. It's either they don't have a PC at all, or they don't collect software the way I do.

I guess I will go to one of mentioned sites and see if it/they can help me out.

Thanks, everybody!

Have you tried polishing the disc surface?

The surface is covered with a protective film and polishing out the scratches and the crap etc may sort you out!

I know what you mean. I run three win98se systems. I find it superior to the newer OS in many ways particularly the control one has with it. Win98se doesn't have all that anti-piracy bloatware wasting space and resources.

Catch me on the IRC channel. I'll explain there a method you can use to recover your win98se cd.

"May work."

Catch me on the IRC channel and I'll describe another method to you if you have a cdrw drive.
