Exclamation I.E. won't let Windows XP shut down

I am running XP Pro with latest updates(SP2).When I restart or shut down Windows, a box appears and says IE program closing, but it won t let windows shut down. I have to close the box manually then it will shut down(Windows).

I don't think there is SPYWARE on my CPU. I recently did a reformat because of spyware(SPYAXE). I run ADWARE daily and nothing ever comes up.

I hope someone can help cause this is driving me crazy!!!!

Did this start happening just after your re-format and fresh install?

This happened shortly after the fresh format. I'm wondering if its one of the programs that I installed....(ALCOHOL 120%,NORTON WORKS,CATALYST CONTROL CENTER....) I never had this problem before. Driving me nutz!

Question, is IE actually open when you are shutting down? Or does that message appear when IE isn't actually open as well? Can you check with Task Manager immediately before shutting down to see if IE is still open even though you have closed it prior to trying to shut down?

Second, how comfortable are you editing your registry?

NEVER did edit the registry. I'm a fast learner though. If you walk me through it, I may pull it off...

OK to to Start/Run and type regedit.

Go to second to the bottom HKEY_USERS

Click on the + and go to the second to the bottom key - that should have a long number like the screen shot.

Click on the +, then on the + to the left of Control Panel, then Desktop and you should see something just like the screenshot. Make sure you carefully edit the lines to the values I give you in the screeenshot, then close regedit and reboot. Explorer may still hang with that boot because until the reboot, the changes are not effective. These changes should force Explorer to close in subseqent boots.

You can add a line just like that. Use the exact name and value as shown in the screenshot. But, try the reboots first, let's see if that works. I will be gone for a couple of hours, but will check back when I come back to see if it worked. All those changes are intended to end misbehaving or hung pograms and to force them to close when Windows closes.
