Great nuglorious Main screen will probably have the basic info we need. Look for a Diskette A entry (1.44MB, 3.5 inch) and any identified hard drives. Feel free to go through the menu system, but don't change anything. It can seriously affect your ability to boot !! See if you can find Load Setup Defaults'. May need that too. I'll see if I can find a manual for it. Will make it a lot easier to explain. Any other markings on the computer like P550 or P550E ? ddd

| the G: could possibly be a virtual drive that is loaded with nero burning ROM, Alcohol 120%, and a few other little programs such as this. The P550 or P550E markings that ddd is talking about is the markings on the case of the computer. In the BIOS, you should be able to use the arrow keys to move around in there to see different areas of your BIOS. But as ddd said,,,do NOT change anything in the BIOS settings unless you know for sure what you are doing.

Meant to ask if the system clock is keeping proper time. Should be on Main page (yop menu left). Also, Load Setup Defaults (or similar) should be on the last page (top menu right). Neither should be hidden in the menu system. We need to find any indication of a floppy drive available. If we can't confirm this.. we'll be looking for a Phillips screwdriver instead ddd

We need to get the floppy running before anything. Won't be able to install Win98 without CD access either. Make sure you have a bootable floppy with CD support. Test it in another computer first. (you'll get an A:\ prompt). If so, put a CD in your CDROM drive and the floppy in your computer, turn it on and enter the BIOS. The 'load defaults' selection is what you need. Select it, press Enter. It might ask you to confirm.. select yes. When you exit the BIOS, choose 'Exit and Save'. These selections aren't word for word, but similar. If you get the A:\ prompt, check for other drives by entering.. dir c: type it exactly as shown. Replace the c: with d: , then e: and so on If you DON'T get the A:\ prompt, let us know what the error message is. ddd

How do you exit the BIOS? There's usually an 'Exit' choice in the menu. Should be there. 'Storage' section should have hard drive and floppy info. What do you have listed there? I'll have to find a manual ddd Last edited by dddibley; 02-04-2005 at 04:56 PM..

Found it.. Resetting CMOS in BIOS - File Menu.. Set Defaults.. Exit. Apparently there's a button on the motherboard for resetting the BIOS(CMOS). Appendix A.. Password Security and Clearing and Resetting CMOS. It's all here. http://h200001.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/s...122838-002.pdf We should be able resolve this. There are tons of diagnostics programs available for this computer ddd

Welcome back The idea is to reset the BIOS then boot from your DOS boot floppy. Make it the first boot device.. since you plan on loading Windows 98 from CD (not bootable). Once you get the A:> prompt, put the Windows CD in your CDROM drive and see if you can access it. Not sure what drive letters you have, but try typing each of these at the prompt.. dir D: dir E: dir F: etc. If you get a Windows directory list on E: for example, you can change to the cd drive by typing.. E: Prompt should change to E:> Then type SETUP That should get the ball rolling ddd

Just to clarify. Go to BIOS.. Set defaults.. reboot back to BIOS.. Set floppy as first boot device.. Insert 98 boot floppy.. Save changes.. Reboot. Do you get a cursor blinking on a black screen (upper left) or is it the floppy drive light that keeps blinking? Either way.. if you don't get the A:> prompt then the floppy is bad or the floppy drive cable needs to be taken off and reinserted. There was also mention of a floppy drive button not being pushed in. Not sure what that means though. Don't believe Win2K is a bootable CD.. thus the 'missing operating system'. Good news is.. at least the computer is trying to read the CD. ddd

Yes, I did the first procedures which you did written. Yes I saw cursor blinking on blank screen not the floppy drive lights. If thats the case I need to open cpu and take off the floppy drive cable and reinserted???
