Problems with Desktop icons

Im running xp por 64bit and installed a driver for a gamepad. Now my desktop icons are replaced with a whitebox with the name underneath. double click and the icons work fine. anything i try to drag onto or reinstall onto the comp with a desktop icon also is whited out like the others. i have uninstalled the driver for the gamepad and even did a system restore to the preveous setting before the driver was installed and still nothing. What the heck has casused this? Ive also tried to go under properties and change the icon on each one and it doesnt change. ANy help id be grateful cause this is a new build and really dont want to reinstall windows if i can help it

He allready tried that (restore point) with no success. Hmm, strange problem.
