Hey Budz

That article was interesting but also contained a lot of factual errors. I have Windows XP, and its great (IMO). I have changed my configuration several times, including a change of RAM, the movement of all the components, the removal of Hollywood Plus, and a new video card, and so far I haven't had to call Microsoft ONCE.

This guy has clearly NOT obtained his information from the Newsgroups that are devoted to Windows XP.

Cheers

Tam

Oh your telling me that people haven't bothered actually testing Product Activation.
I still see stories titled 'Replace your keyboard using WinXP and you'll have to contact MS'
That is just utter BS.
You would have to do a major and I mean major amount of hardware upgrades to force re-activation.
Example:
Work PC, running WinXP Beta.
Last Friday I made the following changes:
ATI XPert 8MB AGP card out, Matrox G450 AGP card in.
PIII 800 CPU out, PIII 1Ghz CPU in.
2x 128MB DIMM's out, 2x 256MB DIMM's in.

Suprise, suprise I didn't have to re-activate my OS.

Tam, Bladerunner - you guys are both right.
a lot of the biggest issues ppl, and i, had with XP have been proven wrong or slightly incorrect...
a lot of ppl jumped onto the BASH M$ train because of a few rumours about XP...
i still don't like it too much, am perfectly happy with 2K, but time may prove me a liar still
glad you guys like it, and really glad the hardware thing isnt as bad as it was originally made out to be...

Hi Cryogen

Gee, I think I sounded terribly know-it-all. I didn't mean to disregard the points that others made before me. I agree with you about some of the many points about Microsoft and their never ending drive toward subscription based software so we will be in hock to them for the rest of our lives.

I just wish Linux was easier to understand.

The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

If you really want to learn Linux then I suggest waiting for SuSE 7.2 (should be coming out in a full weeks). Get the $30 Personal Edition. You will get 3 CDs (yes, that's right - it takes 3 CDs of software or about 2.5 Gig of installation space but remember you get much more than you get with a Windows install). Please note that I'm not bashing MS here, it is simply the truth that you get much more - like a office suite, CD burning tools (not just one), programming languages, anyway the list is long. Anyway, the really good thing about SuSE Personal Edition is that you get three books! One for installation (short book), one for understanding Linux applications, and another for understanding SuSE. You also get free support for installation questions for, I believe, 90 days.

SuSE should see your video card without a problem and even your USB printer. I'm still amazed at how well put together the SuSE installation is.

I went to the Office XP launch this weekend. Looks to be a good product but.......
while it does offer advantages over Office 2000, it sure as hell ain't worth the $329-$500 (US), they want for it.

My recommendation:
If you have 2000 dont bother.
If you have 97 or dont have Office at all, AND you need a productivity suite go for it.
Otherwise, there are lots of less expensive options for most people.

I will recieve the "official" "unofficial" release of WinXP by the end of the month.

Not trying to bash Micro$oft at all. I do have lots of products of theirs...starting with WinME...Office 2000...Encarta...Streets and Trips and countless others. My productivity is based in MS...considering that all the Office programs are what I use for Newsletters, fliers, advertisments and more. I also use Photoshop and other high end graphics stuff as well. What I don't buy into is the upgrade scheme that MS is trying to force down corporate's throat at this point...Upgrade now...or pay more later...I really think that MS better rethink the attitude or they may pay later. It is my intention to upgrade Windows to Win2000, based on numerous posters here sharing the experience. With that...my need for XP is really nill...as with Office XP. I am tired of chasing the incremental upgrade train...and XP will be that.

tHE BETA ISSUSE OF XP DOES NOT HAVE THE LINSCENSE LIMATION MENTIONED IN THE AIRTCLE.

tHE REAL WORLD COPY OF XP WILL!!!!!

ALSO THE BETA WILL BECOME NON-WORKING AFTER THE REAL XP IS REALASE SO DONT BASE ANY ASSUMPTIONS THAT THE AIRTCLE IS FALSE, BILL GATES HAS ALSO STATED THAT THE XP SYSTME CNNOT BE TRANSFERRED BETWEEN COMPUTERS.

HOPEFULLY CUSTOMERS COMPLIANT AND LACK OF SELLS OVER THIS MAKE GATES RICH SCHEME FAILS, THAT XP WILL GO BACK TO BEING AN OPEN APPLICATION FOR THE USER WHO BOUGHT THE SOFTWARE.

Hi Tomcrown

Do you have a beta copy of XP? I use it and you must activate it before 15 days have passed. The product activation features are being beta tested as well. It would make no sense for Microsoft to send out its Betas and RC1 and RC2 with the product activation features deactivated since they are trying to test and see whether this feature WORKS or not.

I could be worng. But I have to say that it seems to me that some people are over-reacting at this point Anyway, thanks for your input

Don't bash Win XP

Win XP is something that Microsoft must do. Technologies is moving forward and its old Windows including Me, Y2K, 98, NT is outdated. They all based on a very old firmware spec that so rigid that it prevents architecture revolution. 64bit CPUs will be here soon and one day home PC will have them too. It's not just the 64 Bit CPU that counts, there is a whole new architecture standard designed by many companies like Intel, Compaq, HP, IBM, Phoenix, Dell, Toshiba, ... that comes with it and Microsoft just has to adopt and follow if they want to survive. They just give it a new name.

It it is full of bugs, bash it but don't bash it just because it is another product. There is a new industry standard and architecture that wrapped in it. Give it some time to perfect. Anything that starts out has problems.

Imagine, you never have to turn off your computer, computers (home or servers) use a lot less energy than today, its power consumption is so low that you can stack a hundred computers together and the room temp does not go up much, plugging a card or replace a DIMM while browsing the Web, .....

By the way, I do not work for them.
