Thousands of new files w/XP SP3

Just installed SP3. It seems to work OK.

But now I have many thousands of new files on my computer. Can some of these be removed? I'm thinking particularly about the files in
C:\WINDOWS\Installer

This contains over 11 GB. Before SP3, this contained about 118 MB.

613 MB here. Something's not right with 11 GB in there.

Re: Thousands of new files w/XP SP3

650 to 700 or so on my recent machines; 1.2gB on a machine I built 6 years ago, and subsequently updated from SP1 to SP2, and then from SP2 to SP3.

I have no idea why you are seeing 11gB, or if it is safe to remove those files.

Regards,

Re: Thousands of new files w/XP SP3

Well, I was wrong on one detail. Only a small fraction of this C:\INSTALLER mess was created by the SP3 update. I got the 118 MB number from my other identical (hardware & OS, but not applications) computer, which is never online.

My online computer (the problem) has 637 files in C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER root, each sized 18.76 MB and each with the extension .msp. That totals around 11 GB. There are also a couple dozen subdirectories, but the total for all of these is tiny by comparison.

Sounds like temp files aren't getting cleaned up for some reason.
