Tool for displaying file locks in Windows XP?

Well, the subject says it all and I need one . Freeware would be prefered, but I really need it so anything will do!

Can anyone recommend such a tool for me?

I'm not quite sure exactly what you are looking for, but is this it?

While the link is loading in the background...

The problem is that I often experience that files I want to delete or move are being locked by some other process. This is, of course, very annoying, but I can't get to the bottom of which process actually gets in my way. So now I want a tool that can show me which files are locked and by which processes.

I hope this explains my need better .

EDIT: I just looked at the program description now that the page loaded. It seems to be exactly what I need! Thanks!

Gah... The name of the download site won't resolve properly .

If anyone has this program already (or is able to download it in case it's just my DNS that's not working properly) then please attach the 11 KB zip-file to this thread .

You're fast, hehe. I managed to locate a different download site than the author's own and was about to attach the file myself for anyone else who might be interested .

I'm curious, did you get through to http://www.skrubbeltrang.com ?

No, I had the file. I keep a large backup of all my file downloads and all the installation software I have ever used or downloaded. I have about 28gb of installers backed up at this point. I even have a lot of really old software including stuff that will only run under Win95 and such. Never know when you will need it. One of my sons needed to do a repair on a friend's Win95 OS machine - talk about old, and I still had an original installer CD around for him to use for the repair. I'm like a pack rat. Need a copy of Lotus 1-2-3 v1a maybe?

LOL, actually I once owned a copy of the entire Lotus Smart Suite! Several versions too due to free upgrades .

I've tried the program now and it says that the files are NOT locked! With the footnote that there is 1 process that I do not have sufficient access to (I'm logged in as administrator so it has to be some sensitive system process). Anyway, it has to be this process that ruins my day because I still cannot delete those files...

At least I now know that it's just Windoze that's messed up, hehe.

Try MoveOnBoot. It schedules a file for deletion at the next boot before the OS loads. You can grab that from SnapFiles also. After you install it, right click on the file and you will see a new context menu item to move or delete on next boot. Works like a charm, even with viruses and trojans that lock themselves under Windows.

Ok, I want the file, but the site is not resolving, and PCBs gives me an error?

What kind of error?? It's just a normal zip file. In fact, I just downloaded it and it unzipped fine for me.

I wouldn't be surprised if ProcessExplorer displays what you want.

If you're a CLI-jockey, this one should float your boat.

And then there's FileMon...

The thing is that the files are on my server and I'm not planning any reboots for quite some time.

I'm guessing that the files will be unlocked after the next reboot anyway so I'll just postpone the deletion until then. I base my assumption on that the files are just (partial) rar-archives that I've already unpacked and I've double checked that WinRAR has indeed terminated. My guess is that Windows "forgot" remove the locks made by WinRAR (funny how it just forgot 3 locks out of about 100...).
