Windows Product Activation is not registering. Windows XP activation does not require you to give up any personal information.
UNQUOTE

Uhh.....isn't telling someone what kind of hardware you have(or your aggregate score in this case) giving up personal information?

Oh no!
Stored somewhere in a clearing house is the following:

My XP Key - Computer Score 56784

Quick, time to unplug that modem and switch off because god knows what data and personal information they will be able to get from me.

Ohh,you shouldn`t consider this too funny.I don`t as everyone who respects his privacy and also respects others.Don`t fool others that only score/combination of H/W is collected.

And if we talk about jokes:I think MS is not collecting private data in any way!

Thumbs up Blade, Blade, Blade

Now I wasn't bashing ms about pa. I will however ask you to go here and read the featured article. I have tested this on a clean install of my roommates machine and I find it odd. Please read it and try it on your own machine.

My point on pa is this. I understand the thought process, and I condone it, as evidenced by some posts I have read here. Since the early 80's, privacy has been increasingly becoming harder to keep.
Look at the fact that every time you go to a website they ask for your email and other personal information(which you MUST give if you want the product or service) and next thing you know, 10 spam messages a day. PA can lead to even more. Who's to say that MS won't think in a year "oh this pa isn't working, we need tighter control". Whatever they do, the majority of companies will follow and it will get worse, in terms of MY personal privacy.
I like my privacy, and the choice of how much info i wish to give out. This may not seem like an invasion of privacy on the surface, but this is how the erosion of personal privacy is started. Start in small steps, with things like PA, and people will grumble but accept it. The next step will be a little deeper, maybe wanting an address or something, but still most will blindly accept it(mainly because of the instant gratification society I live in). Again Blade, I agree with you...I'm just asking you to look at the other side for a minute with an open mind.

Hummmm......
Have you ever read a review for an AMD CPU at www.intel.com ?
Have you ever seen details on an Intel CPU at www.amd.com ?
Have you ever seen a non bias Intel review at www.tomshardware.com ?
Do they sing the praises of Novell over at www.microsoft.com ?
Do they tell you how great AD is over at www.novell.com ?

Funnily enough they don't.
That is why I never believe anything I read at The Register or will even take a site called ****microsoft.com seriously.

Instead I do my own research and read it from independent sources or white papers.

"I value my privacy"
You obviously don't because you are currently on-line and using the Internet.

Hay, have you read all those stories about how the Intel PIII Serial Number has been taken by lots of hackers and the such?
Once they get that PIII Serial Number they can do a lot of harm and spend your money and shut your PC down?

Again no, it was a lot of people complaining about nothing, again.

Blade,
I noticed you said nothing about testing what was written in that article. As for the first four comments, one would not expect praise for another competitor because that's not how business is done, and it's foolish to even say that.

****microsoft.com is a bunch of MS haters, that is true. BUT if you read the article and try the test, you WILL find these files, they ARE hidden from windows, and I find that disturbing.

Yes I value my privacy, and why does me being online have to mean I can't keep some semblance of privacy? I am quite sure your real name is NOT bladerunner, therefore you have some semblance of privacy, correct? I learned the hard way to not sign up for online services very early in my internet experience. It's very tiring to delete 30 adult related spam messages a day!

Would you please explain to me why these files are here, why I can see a record of EVERY website I've been to, what files are newly created on my hd, especially when I clear my cache and recent lists once a month?? I would like to know. Show me the point behind this. Is it a software flaw? An unexpected side effect? Deliberate? You are quick to tell us how silly we are being about things like this, yet now I offer you proof of things that are very interesting, and should be looked into. Are you going to look at it or not?

(edit) note this is for the average home users pc we are talking about here, not a business system.

I like their "PRIVACY ALERT!" warning at the idea of registration, despite every piece of software I've bought over the last 5 years encouraging registration in one way or another.
