http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/01...906/index.html

I'm sure that WinXP should be capable of this also....

I've considered moving to software RAID because my RAID card is only ATA-4 while my onboard IDE controllers are ATA-5. The difference between the simple IDE RAID cards and software RAID seems insignificant. Software might even be better because AFAIR it supports RAID 5!

I'd still need my RAID card, though, because I have five harddisk drives ...

Yes, I am sure it's always been there. It's just that I never knew about it and thought I would let other's know.

Yep! way to try out RAID. FYI this can also be done under NT if you want to play around with it @ don't have 2K. Be aware that performance probably won't be as good as firmware or hardware RAID (using IDE or SCSI cards): bus/proc utilization issues. Also, most mobos will only leave room for one additional IDE drive (CD-RW, DVD, etc.) if you run RAID 5, which requires 3 HDD's.

Has interesting potential if you have a dual-proc mobo, more than 2 IDE channels, or other things along this line.

You can run IDE RAID 5 using some cards, for info read IDE RAID Comparison @ Anandtech. I have some more goodies on IDE RAID coming if I can ever find time to finish writing the article...

My experience (I've tested it) is that the cheap IDE RAID cards (all those that only support RAID 0/1/0+1 and JBOD - $100-150 price range) have performance comparable to that of software RAID.

These cards have little more than the minimum amount of equipment required to run RAID. For instance they lack a decent onboard processor and cache.

If you want performance beyond this entry level you need to look at the more expensive IDE RAID cards with onboard processor (and RAID 5 support) and cache (now, we're talking $250+ price range). These MIGHT be able to outperform software, but I've seen examples where they couldn't...
