| XP Pro repair hangs on final installation my computer does not want to start. it keeps restarting rather than booting up. i pressed F5 while booting up and booted through the original disk, and i selected reinstall windows, and then selected repair through the reinstall windows process. after going through the process of what looked like a complete reinstall, it is now hung up in the "Final Installation", approximately 3 minutes remaining. i pressed "shift F10" and got a dialog box that said it's in the "Saves settings" and "removes and temporary files used". it's been stalled in this for over an hour now. i am running an Asus P4C800E motherboard with windows XP Pro. any help appreciated as it's still stuck atm!!! regards, rm |

| Re: XP Pro repair hangs on final installation Ok, the big chrome/silver colored button shaped battery, on your motherboard. Pop this battery out and leave it out for 5min. Then pop it back in. But before you try this *UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER*. After you reinstall the battery, then plug your computer back in and start it up/reboot. If ya get back into the bios, reinstall windows.

| Re: XP Pro repair hangs on final installation Try overnight without the CMOSS battery in/with computer unplugged. If the next day it boots/starts and the bios comes up. Set your DVD drive to first to boot, with the XP installation disk. Let it install a new XP system.

| Re: XP Pro repair hangs on final installation should i give up on repair and just reinstall windows on the c-drive? i have a 250 gig HD set up with 2 partitions, the c drive is strictly for windows and my f drive has most of my programs on it. i'm hoping that because i did it this way, i can still salvage my programs on the f drive. i already have it set to default to boot first with the cd drive. i can get to the bios, i've been there a few times already and i've tried to repair my XP install 5 times. i keep getting hung up when it's saving settings in those last 3 minutes of the repair install. very frustration. |

I think it would be worthwhile to test your memory, by creating a bootable cd containing Memtest86+: Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool Also, disconnect or remove as much internal and external hardware as possible, in case a particular piece of hardware is causing the problem. Remove unnecessary pci cards, and extra hard drives if present. Also, disable as much mobo hardware as possible, in the bios (particularly the network interface, and the onboard sound, and while you are at it you might as well turn off the firewire port and anything else that can be turned off as well). Hope that helps, -- Al
