| Automatic update killed my display After installing the last set of Automatic updates, my computer restarted and now it's come back up to a black screen. I still get the BIOS screen and the initial green bar loading screen, but then just black. Windows continues to load in the background and connect to my Wifi network, and the Vista jingle sounds, but the screen is completely black. What the hell Microsoft? I've got a Lenovo laptop with GMA950 on board. Any ideas???

| Re: Automatic update killed my display I booted in safe mode, uninstalled the display driver, and then booted again and reinstalled it. Same thing, black screen as soon as windows loads. Have now uninstalled the display driver again and am running sfc /scannow This better fix it as rolling back to the initial installation is going to be a major pain. Love how MS deploys system killing bugs onto your system.

| Re: Automatic update killed my display Check a couple of the other threads started. MS has some WU issue that has a fix or is going to have a fix. Infinite reboot problem.

| Re: Automatic update killed my display sounds like a video driver resolution issue. Try a different set of drivers.

| Re: Automatic update killed my display Sorry to hear this-----what a pain!!! A couple of thoughts: Couldn't you just do a quick System Restore from the time before the updates? Then do the updates a couple at a time to try and identify the offender. I've found Vista System Restore to be EXCELLENT..... MUCH better and more reliable than XPs....... Overall----I agree with Zap----sounds like a vid driver issue.... was one of the updates a newer version of the Intel Vid Driver???

| Re: Automatic update killed my display I don't use system restore. sfc /scannow fixed it though. Thank goodness for that. Wasn't a driver issue as same set was working fine prior to update and is now working fine after sfc fixed whatever files automatic updates corrupted.

| Re: Automatic update killed my display Chews disk space. Not that I don't have plenty. Actually you make a good point. The main reason really is that I use this laptop for email and browsing, reading (text) documents and maybe the occasional DVD burning. That's all I have on it. I feel I don't need system restore because I don't install programmes on it that could potentially screw my system. Didn't know that windows updates could be one of them.

| Re: Automatic update killed my display You should turn it on and do a restore point right before you update something. If all goes well just turn it off again. There is also an option in disc cleanup to delete all but the latest restore point.

I extracted the Vista key with some Warze and re-loaded with a Anytime Upgrade DVD. They cost $6.00 on Amazon.com.
