Disk defrag in Vista is not there?

I would defrag once a month well this month I right clicked C properties....tools....Drefragmentation...and nothing happens.....restarted still nothing.... I am wondering if i stopped a certain service in which disk defrag needs to operate as I am running selective start up? Wondering if I should just go to 3rd party ?

Re: Disk defrag in Vista is not there?

You need to turn on the Desktop Window Manager Session manager service to have the option to defrag your hard drive.

I have been using Perfectdisk for the last few years as it has worked great for me. You might want to download an evaluation version of Perfectdisk 2008 and see it works for you.

Go into windows explorer, right mouse click your hard drive partition, select properties, go to the tools tab, and click Defragment now within the defragmentation box.

Re: Disk defrag in Vista is not there?

It should analyze all of the partitions, then allow you to select which partitions to defragment, then you click on okay to start the defragmentation. You will not see a gui interface like you did with the XP Pro version of the disk defragmenter.

Try restarting the Desktop Window Manager Session manager service. If this does not help, try rebooting your system. (Before rebooting make sure the service is set to automatic)

Re: Disk defrag in Vista is not there?

Glad the defrag is working for you now.

Regarding the installation of SP1, I had to remove the X-Fi soundcard from my system and uninstall all of Creative's software before it would install successfully. I installed the soundcard and the software afterwards, though I have to reboot a few times to get the sound working properly.

I tried removing the card and drivers but still was getting same error. I will try it again after I reverted back to stock settings in MSCONFIG.......
