It just recovers the system... all your files will remain intact.

No problem

I completely understand the apprehension behind it.

I believe there's a little misunderstanding. If using System Restore, which I believe is what Crabby referred to, the files will remain intact. However, if using the "Recovery Discs" that came with the PC, all files will be gone and the PC will be back to the way it was when received from the manufacture.

If he formats the drive I would agree... But if he just reinstallsit would be fine. I suppose the issue I didn't think of is if he uses a manufacturers disk... but then there is usually a warning that says it will be formatting the drive.

Maybe I was too hasty :s I suppose we'll only know if he replys

The way I read it, he wants to use the discs that came with the manufacture. If that's the case, he'll be pulling his hair out by now trying to find out where his old data is. Though it depends on the PC manufacture.

My Dell PC's came with the operating disc, software disc and driver disc, which can be used separate. On the other hand, my Gateway came with three discs name 1, 2 and 3, which require that all be used at once, meaning complete system restore.

Hey... it depends what you do... if you format the drive you will lose everything... if you install over the drive without formatting everything will be moved to a 'WINDOWS.OLD' folder.
