Remove Text from Desktop Icons

Hi All, I found this article on the Windows Vista Magazine site showing you how to remove text from desktop icons.

Thought some of you might like this idea.
But I personally can't get mine to work.
If anyone can get this to work, can you tell me exactly how you did it?

I only keep four icons on my desktop: Computer, Mitch (My Documents), Programs (anytime a program installs an icon on the desktop I put it in here), and an IE icon. I tried this trick with Computer and it worked but when I went to "Mitch" it would not let me rename it so I gave up there.

Is this a Home Premium - can not do?

I have Ultimate, I simply right click any icon, move to rename, left click and then change to what ever I want it called... click yes, and then yes-continue, the screen blinks, and when it reappears the icon is renamed.

Here is what my icons look like after applying the tip:



First I clicked Rename and held down ALT and typed 255. The next one I held down ALT and typed 255<space>255. Then the next one ALT 255<sp>255<sp>255. Like I said, I could not rename MY folder because it don't give you the option of renaming it.

But be aware that there is a side effect of doing this. Notice that Computer has disappeared from the menu bar:

Ack! I was able to relabel all icons except my Programs folder. When I try to rename it nothing happens. I even created another folder for Programs and moved everything into it and tried to delete the old folder but it won't go. I get no message or anything, it just refuses to go away. I try to drag it into the recycle bin and it pops back up again.

I tried going to the Admin side (I am running as standard user) and renaming the folder but it failed also. I also tried System Restore twice and it has failed each time. It will probably require some kind of registry hacking but I do not know enough about it to know what exactly to hack.

The only difference that this is a folder instead of a shortcut like the others.

By the way, I know you probably won't care but the real term for 'Previous Versions' is called Shadow Copy, sorry I'm just picky.

Shadow Copy helps you recover a file if you accidentally delete it.

Have you ever accidentally saved over a file you were working on? Accidental file deletion or modification is a common cause of data loss. Windows Vista includes a useful innovation to help you protect your data: Shadow Copy. Available in the Ultimate, Business, and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista, this feature automatically creates point-in-time copies of files as you work, so you can quickly and easily retrieve versions of a document you may have accidentally deleted. Shadow copy is automatically turned on in Windows Vista and creates copies on a scheduled basis of files that have changed. Since only incremental changes are saved, minimal disk space is used for shadow copies.

Easily access this feature by right-clicking a file or folder and selecting "Restore previous versions." It enables you to go back in time and access your files and folders as they were on previous dates. You can preview each file in a read-only version to determine which file to restore. Then, to fully restore it, you can just drag the file to a folder, or select it and click "Restore" to restore it to its original location.

It works on single files as well as whole folders. When restoring a file, all previous versions that are different from the live copy on the disk are shown. When accessing a previous version of a folder, users can browse the folder hierarchy as it was in a previous point in time.

Some product features are only available in certain editions of Windows Vista and may require advanced or additional hardware.

I read about this the other day. I do remember seeing the Previous Versions option when I had Ultimate. But it disappeared when I had to go back down to HP.

The article mentioned that even the Basic and HP versions do shadow copying but cannot be accessed. This is a waste in my opinion to have a feature working in the background, taking up HD space and the user cannot even take advantage of it.

Back to my icon problem the only way I see to fix it now is to move all my files into the Public folders, log back in the Admin account, delete my account, recreate it, and then move all the files back from Public into my folders.

When I got a few hours to kill I will do this, lol.
