Thumbs down Safely Remove Hardware

Ok so I installed Vista a little over a month ago and found your site here, I have to say its been the best guild for me, the only thing I can't figure out is in Xp I could create a custom reg key to make my Sata hd's not show up in Safely remove hardware, but now that folder isn't in my vista reg and I've searched everywhere for it.

Recap - Sata hd's show up in safely remove hardware.

Specs

Asus M2N-e mobo
Amd 5600+ x2
2900pro 1gig version
2gigs of Cas4 Transend Axe ram (don't knock it till u try it its great ram)
120 & 250 gig Sata II Seagate hd's
Samsung DVD burner Sata II
Thermaltake Xtreme 500 Dual 12v Pwr Supply

Thanks any help would be appreciative :newbie:

I imaging that this is what you have in XP: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvata.

However, the driver (last string) is now called NVSTOR in Vista, instead of nvata, and it does appear in the registry.

Thanks for the update there, but the same key I added doesn't work under Vista.

Sorry, but I really don't have a clue. I'm not sure if MS has corrected that issue with SP1. I'm not using SATA drives, so I can't test it on this side. Perhaps someone else here in this forum has the correct answer.

OK, this problem seems to occur to more than one person.
I have Vista, I use 3 SATA drives, and I have never seen this safe to remove in reference to them.

please explain exactly and maybe I can help...
I only have internal SATA drives if that makes a difference... and if your using external SATA drives I'm positive that the plugins function the same as USB devices... that is what my Vista compatible mobo manual tells me.

Bios setting is RAID off.

ASRock mobo

I think JackTheRipper is referring to internal SATA drives. There's a way to hide attached USB devices so they don't show up in the notification area. For example, my all-in-one printer has 6 card readers that used to show up in the Safely Remove Hardware list. Since I can't unplug them, other than unplugging the printer, I didn't need for them to show up on this list.

So I right clicked the Task Bar and selected Properties, went to the Notification Area tab and clicked Hide inactive icons and then clicked Customize. There I selected the hardware I wanted to hide and those applications I wanted to show up all the time.

I just not sure if this will work with SATA drives or if it's the info JackTheRipper is searching for.

Seems that sometimes in reference to this string you have to: For XP

Quote:
1. Click Start -> Run
2. Execute regedit
3. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvata

4. Click Edit
5. Select New > DWORD value
6. Name this DWORD: DisableRemovable
7. Double click this new DWORD and set its value to one (1).
8. Close Regedit and reboot
Settings are such: Vista = Does not show any internal SATA drives in taskbar.
Quote:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvstor]

"ErrorControl"=dword:00000003
"Start"=dword:00000004
"Type"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvstor\Parameters]
"BusType"=dword:00000008

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvstor\Parameters\PnpInterface]
"5"=dword:00000001
