Re: W7 Tips

You're welcome - I got a couple good tidbits off of it. I miss the Quick Launch, you can get it back, but they don't want you to.

Re: W7 Tips

Good tips Ozzie!!!

Thanks.....

This guy is REALLY into keyboard shortcuts......which I'm personally not....

But some of the stuff I had NO clue on----and is EXCELLENT!

I kinda made my own Quick Launch Toolbar using the new Taskbar and assigning apps to it-----kind of like the old Quick Launch.....

But I personally miss the Quick Launch Toolbar----it was simple and elegant----and takes up less space then the "new way"

So I will probably re-enable it on my Asus EeePC

I think one of the BIGGEST things he missed is the way Windows 7 now can back up an ENTIRE IMAGE of your PC to a network location.....

Who needs Acronis after this-----a saved "image" would be available any time you had a drive blow out----or a problem you couldn't fix.

The method is not as sophisticated as what Windows Home Server uses (in it----you can actually open up the image and pull out an idividual file if you want)------but this is a tremendous safety feature built into the OS----NICE!

I KNOW speech recognition is better in Windows 7----I've tried it----MS has taken a superb speech recognition engine in Vista----and made it even better....

And I have some Tablet friends that say the Tablet portion of Windows 7 is ALSO better than Vista's----which once again----I though Vista's implementation of Tablet stuff----pretty darn good!!!

I'm getting more excited every day!!!!

Only problem is that I'll be updating 7 machines and it will cost me a FORTUNE!!!

Maybe they will sell me a volume license LOL......

You might look into Microsoft's TechNet program:

Full Version Software Evaluation & Technical Resources | TechNet Plus

That gives you:

Quote:
Microsoft software licensed for evaluation purposes. Evaluate full-version commercial products without time limits or feature limits, including Microsoft operating systems, servers, and Office System software. With full-version software, you can make informed decisions about new technologies and deployments at your own pace.
Currently, a new subscription costs $349 (annual renewals are $249). But, I also found this:

Quote:
15%-OFF Special TechNet Plus Subscription Promotion – Yes, save $52.39 off of a TechNet Plus Direct Subscription, and even more on the others!
Use Promotion Code TMSAM08 (that’s ZERO-8) before June 30, 2009
Of course, you'll have to decide if you meet their eligibility requirements (test and evaluation purposes only).

Re: W7 Tips

Thanks Dave!!!!

Great Tip!!

I have no trouble stating that I would be evaluating the software....

Heck----I already am a Beta Tester for Windows 7 and Windows Home Server------and I test educational software all the time.....

My recommendations go to our school system-----especially on operating systems.....

sooooo---I think I meet that requirement in both spirit and intent.....

My question would be how many machines can I load the software on simultaneously????

If I could legally load all 7-----then WOW----this would be a huge savings!!!!

Unfortunately, that's tough to answer. According to the "Activating a Product" paragraph on:

Product Keys | Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Quote:
When a Microsoft product requires activation (such as Windows Vista), the product keys provided with your subscription allow a limited number of activations. The product keys available through your subscription can have one or more activations per product key. Multiple Activation Keys for older products typically are 10 activation keys. As subscribers often need to install and reinstall software, we are working to increase activations available for keys, or to enable issuance of additional keys. If you use products that require activation, many allow up to 30 days usage without activating. If you re-image your computers more frequently than every 30 days, you may want to consider NOT activating them if you have that option based on the product you are installing.
If you deplete activations for a key, you may be able to claim additional keys for that product. Each key has its own set of activations.
In my case, I've been testing various configurations of Vista/XP/Server and other software for several years with multiple re-formats/re-installs/re-activations on several different computers and virtual machines. I've never run into the activation limit. But, then, my test bed currently consists of just 3 physical machines plus a handful of virtual machines.

Re: W7 Tips

If you wind up with 3 or even four keys.....

It would still be a cost savings.....

And----in all honesty----pretty tough to claim that everything is for testing purposes.....

Except in the Windows Home Server area......

Everything I hook to it is basically a test to see if it messes up.....

superb product----it doesn't mess up and is simple to set up and use.....

Thanks Dave......

There was also a Family License Pack for Vista when it first came out-----not as cheap as what you are talking about----but still overall cheaper than 7 OEM licenses

Re: W7 Tips

Nice find, I read through most of them and to me they seem more like tips than "secrets" but either way more information is always great!
