Re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

The tool runs automatically every time you access the Windows Update site (this is part of the scans it does).

Malicious Software Removal Tool

If you go there, you can run an online scan of the tool.

Re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

I've never personally used it for anything other than when it runs at Windows Update.

I prefer my own logical judgment and either Kaspersky or Antivir as my protection from viruses and spyware.

I run a Antivirus prog. And Spybot now and then. As well as logical judgment. But when MS has a new kb890830 out, I run it one time when I get a chance. I never has found anything. But, I don't think there is any harm .do you?

I install the DirecX updates as well. Framework 3.1 came out I l installed that too. I fool with some other computes and don't F -_-k with them as much.

There is definitely no harm in running the program, I was just saying that I don't have it as part of my precautions.

I am happy that you let me know it runs w/Win-update. I could t figure were the thing was going. I found it in directory, but it will not run as a stand alone like the download,

I thought it only ran once immediately after you download it through Windows Update and restart your computer?

Re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

Chuck,

http://www.vista4beginners.com/Windo...e-Removal-Tool

Navigate to c:\windows\system32 folder. Double click 'mrt.exe'.

Or,

Start -> Run -> mrt.exe

Select "Full Scan". "Next".

Re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

I let the tool run with every new version in the hope it finds something, but this never happens; I don't trust it as a security tool: my other anti-virus, -malware, rootkits and anti-everything are far more effective.

Re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

I got a nasty infection over the weekend that wasn't even detectable by the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, AVG Free 7.5, Spybot - Search & Destroy or several other malware specific removal tools. I only ended up having it detected and removed after using a program I found called Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Just thought I'd recommend it.
