AVG 8.5 Free Ed. crashes Firefox and IE

Hi all,

Just wonder if anyone has similar crashing experience with anti-virus AVG 8.5 Free Edition? Since last week, the internet connection was slowed down seriously. At first, I thought it was the modem becoming too hot. Many times rebooting modem did not change the symptom. Then, Firefox crashes repeatedly, many times in a day, and Yahoo Messenger doesn't work well.

It took about 5 or 6 days until today, when suddenly an error message saying AVG Toolbar can't connect to whatever, and Firefox crashes immediately. When I use MS Internet Explorer, it also crashes in few minutes.

Even when I use Browzar internet explorer, this doesn't work smoothly either.

I had to uninstall Firefox and AVG 8.5 Free, reinstall Firefox only. This time it works normally. I am now hesitated to reinstall AVG 8.5 Free. Perhaps I may look for another free anti-virus which has less bugs. Any suggestion for free anti-virus?

Thank you for your time, advice and/or suggestions.

I never have a problem with AVG, I would reinstall and don't install the tool bar! I think thats the problem, there's a check box that you have to uncheck so the tool bar doesn't install, after that you should be fine with AVG 8.5 Good luck!

I agree with FV. I've never had any problem with AVG Free, but I never install the toolbar either.

I did have an issue with some special anniversary edition they had, it hosed the system basically with strange performance issues. Due to that I havent updated the program for a while (althougth I keep the virus defs up to date). [edit - oh no, wait, that was Ad-Aware, I dont think I've ever had any problems with AVG)

Well, I decided its time and just did the update and all seems well. Looks and behaves just as before. I'll post if any issues come up.

Re: AVG 8.5 Free Ed. crashes Firefox and IE

Thank you all for your advice. I decided to test again if the AVG Security Toolbar is the problem, so I re-installed AVG 8.5 Free yesterday as it is with all default settings. At first, it worked until late at night. This morning, when I turned on PC and started Internet, my PC hung.

This time I re-install AVG without the Toolbar. I will come back with some feedback, probably in a week; or earlier if there is any problem. Many thanks again.

Re: AVG 8.5 Free Ed. crashes Firefox and IE

The only problem I have ever had with AVG Free is failed updates on startup. This has been a problem for many people for over a year. It seems AVG checks for updates before the net connection is up and running. After about 6 months or so I gave up on them ever fixing the problem and switched my 3 PC's to Avast Home free and never looked back. I did find the default install was not to my liking but after a few tweaks it feels good to me. Things I change, Disable "Virus Recovery Database", Disable sounds, Disable skins.
Avast Home runs fine for me on low and high spec PC's under both XP and Vista.

Re: AVG 8.5 Free Ed. crashes Firefox and IE

The only thing I dont like about AVG are the ads! (but cannot complain since I'm using the "free" version)...

I found a solution tho; I just position the AVG window so the ad is hidden beneath the task bar - no more annoying ads! hehe

Re: AVG 8.5 Free Ed. crashes Firefox and IE

I agree with wonderwrench about AVG; but I did not tweak anything. I am thinking about Avast too, but Avast seems to slow down my system more than AVG. Basically, when I use the Free edition, not much can be complained. However, even when paying to commercial version, many problems are similar, or they are not fixed quickly, not to mention about the customer services might be bad sometimes. I may try to read a bit more on any other free anti-virus programs.

Re: AVG 8.5 Free Ed. crashes Firefox and IE

I run the following from a .bat file.
It doesn't install safesearch and makes the install pretty much unattended

avg_free_stf_en_85_285a1462.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch /HIDE /DONT_START_APPS /NO_WELCOME /NO_AVGW_STARTUP /QUIT_IF_INSTALLED

You may need to edit the "avg_free_stf_en_85_285a1462.exe" portion to reflect which version you are using.

Re: AVG 8.5 Free Ed. crashes Firefox and IE

Kaspersky is rather well-known, but somewhat expensive to me.

Yesterday, after continuous hanging, freezing problems with my PC, I decided to remove AVG Free 8.5 and install Avast. But, after uninstall AVG, many items in Startup disappeared, and components of MS Office Pro and several apps also mysteriously vanished. MS Office suddenly asked for installation CD to update which it couldn't update, and MS Word refused to run. Other apps also did not run from short-cuts, even with newly created short-cuts. Few programs can run directly if I click on their programs from their directories. The whole PC seems being crippled.

Today I decided to re-install everything. This post is made before I format my HDD to do fresh re-installation. It is some frustration I can't deny, since I am in the middle of some work to be done with quite tight schedule.

To be fair, about a month ago, I moved from AVG Free 8 to AVG 8.5 because it did not update. However, as I installed AVG 8.5 and it removed the previous version automatically, I guess the links were kept. Hence, I don't know the cause of this mysterious crippling problem. Just a note here.

This sounds like a real nightmare. Everytime I read something like this I promise myself I'll pick up a back up system.

Re: AVG 8.5 Free Ed. crashes Firefox and IE

Don't use firefox so I may not help much but I have ZERO problems with AVG 8.5 Free.....

My 64 bit Vista Ultimate zips along real nice.

In fact......

I just don't use anything anymore except:
AVG Free
Windows Defender
Windows Firewall
and my Router has a hardware Firewall

For most normal people----I'm conviced that all of the extra "Internet Security" suites like Nortons and Mcafee are really not needed as long as you have an up to date OS with the latest patches----and active AV subscription----an active anti-malware like Windows Defender and a standard windows firewall that hasn't had a lot of holes put in it with exceptions......

Why pay for AV and the others when everything I just quoted is FREE?
