The best Anti-Spyware, AntiVirus combo??

What is the best Anti-Spyware, AntiVirus combo??

The PC in my sig below is a virtual net virgin. I had to dl steam for HL2 and a few MS updates. All of gpu and audio updates have been updated at work and transferred via disk. I am on dial up.

I am thinking about updating XP with SP2 totally and surfing the net more. Instead of my old slow pc that I use mainly for the web at home.

What is the best combo to help me protect my system from these slugs??

Thnx in advance!

You might want to read this, because there is a lot more to security than just that:

Edit: Moving this to the Security Forum.

You really should read PCBruiser's link first. However, they try not to endorse any one product where there are a slew of good ones out there. (No sense working only for the front-runners.) The following products are ones that I have some knowledge of. There are any number of other products out there that I can't comment on.

Anti-Spyware: All five of: Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware (Personal Edition), Microsoft AS, SpywareGuard, and SpywareBlaster. (They are free and compatible.)

Anti-Virus: Any one of: Kaspersky Anti-Virus, F-Secure, McAfee, AVG. (Just to name a few. AVG is free for personal use. There are quite a few good ones out there.)

Firewall: Any one of: Outpost, Kerio, ZoneAlarm (again, just to name a few).

Get a HARDWARE firewall, don't rely on the soft one alone. SonicWall, if you can afford it. Otherwise, Linksys, D-Link, NetGear.

Anti-Trojan: Any one of: TrojanHunter, Ewido, A2 (again, just to name a few).

Anti-RootKit: All three of: RootkitRevealer, BlackLight (while it's still free), Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (mostly does worms, but does some rootkits). All three are free.

Note that the Microsoft tool is run once for each new version of the tool when you run windows update. It is not permanently downloaded to your machine, and you'll have to wait a month before your computer will be scanned by it again. Fortunately, you can download a permanent copy that you can run as often as you like, or you can run the tool over the web.

Just to emphasise one thing that might get missed in Terry's comment - this tool changes almost every month. So, "permanemt" is not exactly the word I would prefer - don't depend on this tool to be "good" for more than a month before you download the newest version.

Also, the Microsoft tool is limited to relatively few items (that Microsoft felt were best handled by themselves) and is not a replacement for other security softwares. On the other hand, the other security vendors ignore at least some of the items covered by the Microsoft tool, because Microsoft already handled it as well or better than they could (lacking Microsoft's intimate knowledge of the OS).

Just to clarify:
The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool is updated on the second Tuesday of each month. Your first Windows Update after the new version comes out will run the tool on your computer that one time only. After that, Windows Update will not run it again until a new version of the tool comes out. Windows Update does not leave a copy of the tool on your computer afterwards. It is wholly possible that you could catch something between updates, so I recommend you either download the tool or run their online version.

The downloadable version is an independent stand-alone Windows program that can simply be run. There is no install.

Download at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Run the tool online at: http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

I've been on vacation so I just got back in town to my PC.

Darn thnx for the replys guys. I never knew that so much was needed just to surf safely these days.Maybe I should just keep my game rig away from the net. What a shame that the net has been degraded by crooks and sleaze bags

My confusion has been that when you Google the info that I requested. Every darn reviewer/expert has a different "#1 anti-spyware" listed on thier site. PC mag has one, cnet has another, etc, etc.

I will try your suggestions starting with the MS software.

For virii, worms, trojans:
AntiVir (free) http://majorgeeks.com/download955.html
For adware, spyware and browser hijackers:
Ad-Aware SE (free) http://majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot Search & Destroy (free) http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (free) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en choose “Continue”.
Each of these 3 ad/spyware scanners can find malware the others miss.
ZoneAlarm v6.1.737.000 (free) http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html
Only use IE when you have to. Start using Firefox as your default browser.
Firefox v1.5 (free) http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

But yeah I have to say the far best combo I have ever tried.

Just an update: Stand-alone BlackLight beta's expiration has been extended until 1st of March 2006. So, this anti-rootkit will be available as freeware for another 2 months.
