Firewall Suggestions: Alternatives

I've heard about some ZA problems, such as 500mb log files...which I really don't need. Any alternate suggestions for me? Freeware would be appreciated.

500mb log files??? I've used ZAPro for years and never had log files like that, and I'm a beta tester for them as well. Nor any problems either, except for a few in some earlier versions, and some of the betas.

Moving this thread to the Security Forums.

I agree with PCB, You're logfiles are only as large as you want them to be. If you want every error/block to be logged then it may accumulate, which you can delete anyways. I just checked my log file its 8kb, and I have had ZAPro for 2 years now. It's really a good program.

For freeware, I don't think you can go wrong using ZA, plenty of control for outgoing programs too. I've had no problems at all with their latest releases this past year.

Must have been misleading information then... seeing as I just got broadband I'll go and download it. I take it ZAPro is the paid for version?

How about Kerio Personal Firewall ?? It is my choice for my PC right now, after playing with ZA and Sygate. Kerio can be download too.

The Sygate and ZA may be a bit annoyinga bout registration. Kerio only asks you few times and never again, even if you don't register.

To some extent, Kerio is good enough so as not to bother with a separate hardware firewall, besides router.

Yep, Pro is the paid version. It has a few more controls and is more customizable than the free version. But, remember still, a software firewall isn't enough to truly protect you, particularly with broadband. You still should have a hardware firewall/router with Stateful Packet Inspection ("SPI") for a complete package. Plus anti-virus, spyware protection, etc. The Securing Windows XP guide in the Reviews Forum will tell you all about how to secure your system properly.
