Security Issue warning!! Folder Sharing in Vista

So, I had a folder of downloaded game maps on my Vista Ultimate desktop that I wanted to share with my kids ( C:\users\xxxx\desktop\maps), I right clicked it and selected "share" ... Ran through the little wizard and figured "that was easy enuff"
My 16 year old walked into my office and said he couldn't find the right folder, so I marched down to his room and there was my entire Vista C:\user\ folder opened in explorer, and he had access to every subfolder!
I checked on the other boxes and I had just shared my C:\user folder with every machine in the house....(My docs aren't in the user folder so it didn't share those, but I presume if your docs are in the default they would be shared as well )...
All the machines on the lan have been set up with my username and password for shared folders..
To remove this share I had to do it from the sharing tab on the user folder itself (deleting the map folder didn't remove the share and there was no sharing information on it's sharing tab)

I've been able to replicate this, so it wasn't a one-time anomaly ..

This could lead to a serious breach of privacy for someone who had docs they'd rather not share.

I suspect it may be one of my network settings in Vista, but I thought I'd better give everyone a heads up.
