Troubles with XP Pro x64bit and security programs...?

Hi all.

I'll explain this the best I can, so bear with me.
I am having great issues whenever I try and install an anti-virus and/or firewall program to my XP Pro x64 bit system. I have tried AVG (free) and Comodo and this is what happens:
The programs install fine and need rebooting, so I do that. Upon reboot my system goes through the regular paces but when it opens to the desktop (computer done rebooting) the desktop image shrinks about 1" all around my monitor (usually the desktop image fills my whole monitor space) and there are no desktop icons visable and no toolbar. I can see my mouse cursor but refresh does nothing...hence; with no icons and/or toolbar I can't do a darn thing or even open a program. This just doesn't happen once but I've done fresh installs 3-4 times now and the same thing happens...yes, I have installed all updates.
What I will do then (when the desktop is funked up) is reboot in safe mode (then I can see my desktop and icons) go to system restore and restore to an earlier time. But I can't just go one time backwards for restore (because the desktop will still boot all funked up) I have to go backwards 3-4 places and then my system will reboot normally and all is well again.

Does any of this sound familiar and/or does anyone have directions for me to try? Please be specific in your responses as I am not a computer whizz, just know enough to be a danger to myself.

Thanks all

I assume you are installing the 64-bit versions of these programs?

I had that happen to me years ago with changing resolutions on a CRT monitor. I would just go back to a resolution that the moniter and video card would accept.

Try running at a low resolution and see what happens.
