i've been fiddling with computers and hardware and stuff for years, but now i want to try to launch a web site, nothing big, just something...i've been googling....but i'm looking for a couple of reliable source sites, like abx, with people i can trust, to give me some advice.... i figured i'd just use one of those web hosts, but what all does it really entailing doing a site?

oh, i see -- well, i figured it would make more sense to spend the $10 or $30 a month to a professional web hoster than to try to do the T-1 line and all that myself. so i would be looking at what is actually required to put web pages up; about all the software i know is MS office and word.

but do you think it might be worth it to try my hand at setting up my own host site? somehow i think that might be a little difficult and expensive....particularly since i would be filing virtually my copy from the road -- from LA, SFO, NY, Boston, etc., from Marriotts and the like....the copy would generally be short stories and maybe a dozen 1MB pix a day.....

In getting started, I would start with paying someone to host your website. In addition you will likely want to register a domain so people can access the site through something like, http://www.ragingbull.com.

I haven't tried it, but this looked like a pretty decent deal, http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosting/. It seems to support all the things someone would need to start a decent looking website. It also provides website design tools.

I am sure others can recommend other hosting services.

Some Internet service providers will provide you with web space but not that much. You will likely out grow it very quickly.

As an FYI, MS Office is a suite of products that are designed to work independently and in unison. MS Word is only one part of the MS Office Suite.

Microsoft offers MS Frontpage, which you may or may not have as a web site creation tool. It can be quite powerful in that it provides the beginner with an easy tool to get started. However, it can also be a pain because of the bloat that it can sometimes create. Good for beginners though.

I'd go with http://godaddy.com and get the cheapest hosting package. They have content management software that you can easily install with just a few clicks. Then you can basically update your site through a web interface like you were posting on a forum or something.

From my account with godaddy, these are the apps that they have built in and can easily be installed.

Microsoft offers MS Frontpage, which you may or may not have as a web site creation tool. It can be quite powerful in that it provides the beginner with an easy tool to get started. However, it can also be a pain because of the bloat that it can sometimes create. Good for beginners though.

If you can cut and paste pics and clip art in MS Word, then you can use MS Frontpage. It is probably one of the easiest wysiwyg HTML editors to use, but as Gorganzola said, it is also powerful.
