You don't really have to read the PDA entries. If you do read them they fill you in on some of the mystery.

Spoiler:
The main key element you have to do first is to take the hidden flash drive from Strelok's secret stash. It tells you about Ghost. Then when you discover Ghost inside Lab X16, his PDA will tell you about the Guide. Then you visit the Guide and he tells you what to do next. But if you do not read the PDA entries, these missions will still show up in the mission section. If they don't then you don't have Strelok's flash drive.

Thats for sure. The PDA is supposed to drive the story along. It helps to develop the plot and give the player a point of reference. It provides useful information about the zone and the factions, anomalies, artifacts and mutants. It also adds to the atmosphere quite a bit by explaining history about the zone. All this while also tracking stashes, missions, stats and NPC's.

A little like Doom3 only a lot less annoying because its so much more useful than the one in Doom3 ever was. Unfortunately it seems to me that the PDA is broken in the game and I dont been the English. The trouble is that stuff can be added to the PDA and you wouldnt know. I found in the end I would regularly check it, going through all the sections to see if something had been added recently. This was more important in the first half of the game.
The other problem was that it didnt record all the conversations I'd had or only recorded parts of them. Finally the handling of the map, zooming and markers, was never very intuitive and was often a PITA, putting me off using it.

I feel that if they put a patch out just to fix the PDA problems then it would make a big difference in gameplay for new players.

Spoiler:
I got in by throwing my rifle at the door and retrieving it quickly and repeating. The location to throw the rifle is correct. It took awhile, but was worth it.

But now you have an exo-suit and there's not much radiation.

I think you guys missed a few things and didn't see a video or two if you didn't get the decoder.

Life was much simpler with the exo-suit.

I sure did miss something about the decoder earlier on - when I play it again I'll pay better attention.
