Looks like I should train my manufacturing skills and get into the Caracal business. Seems to be a demand.

Heck, the ship is the least of my worries. I got nailed in losing a bunch of T2 and named fittings.

Yup, looks like every TUE, although that may change after the patch.

Alliance or not?

Guys,

We need to discuss joining an alliance. We’ve had two offers: from ISS and from FOUNDATION. I’ve tabled the ISS guy for now but I told the FOUNDATION dude that we’d give him an answer by FRI.

As I see it, there are three basic benefits of joining an alliance.

1) Access to 0.0 space. This would also allow us to use alliance member stations until we put up our own. We still have to deal with NPCs and pirates, but we would have some help ratting. We’d also keep a couple bases in Empire, for buying and selling.

2) Controlled access to PvP, and assistance with training.
FOUNDATION is currently at war with Veritas, trying to open up the Great Wildlands to unfettered access. (In fact, this is FOUNDATION’s stated reason for existence.) They’ve retreated to Red Alliance space to regroup and recruit, but the hostilities are continuing – which means that there’s immediate opportunities for both fleet and skirmish activity. SS and I stressed to the alliance contact (Eriqeu) that we need help with PvP training, and he assured us that we will get it.

3) Added benefit of negotiated NAPs with potentially hostile groups.
I requested a FoF list for the alliance and will share when I get it. The umbrella pacts negotiated with the alliance cover all the individual corps. Unfortunately, so do the declared hostilities!

The key costs:

4) ISK. 75 million to join and 1 million per month per corp member ongoing. (FYI, this compares to 25 million upfront and 25 million a month for ISS.) Personally, I don’t think the funds are an issue, especially since some 0.0 mining should recoup that quickly. The key is whether we’re spending the money wisely.

Right now, the upfront fee is being used to pay off the 1 billion alliance formation fee. I have no problem with that, as long as we are listed as a founding member or something. Enrique also promised that they’re building a BPO library and are working toward providing free frigate-level ships to member corps, but I’ll believe that when I see it happen.

5) Gaining allies means gaining enemies. Picking a side paints a target on your back when there are hostilities. The trade-off is that at least one side is your friend, instead of having everyone hunt you.

To me, we have to answer these questions among ourselves before making a decision:

Do we want to go to 0.0? Going in doesn’t mean that we have to stay there all the time, but joining an alliance is not something we want to do on a weekly basis. Once we’re in, we’re in. But no one will babysit us while we’re there, so if anyone doesn’t feel ready, we shouldn’t do it.

Do we have a preference for which part of the map we’re on?
Great Wildlands is near southeast, right under Minmatar space. Personally, I could care less where we go, but if anyone has a strong preference we need to consider that. Current map is here.

Let’s start the discussion ASAP. Also, if you have any questions that you want to ask Eriqeu, please post them here.

I am willing to go further. I have a hard time commiting large blocks of uninterrupted time. I can mine, because it lets me do other things.

I will follow whatever the corp wants to do.

That sounds fine -- one of the opportunities he mentioned will be for manufacturing.

I wonder if CCP is actually a business with profit goals, or just a tax write-off for a rich kid and his pals to play online games?
