| What makes a good gamer. So what does. What can I do to improve my shooting skills. I always seem to find myself in the subpar category when I play online games. In HALO online lots of times I am shooting a guy over and over again but hey manages to kill me in about 3-4 . I also game with a coworker occasionally and he about wipes the floor with me every time. What the heck gives these guys lightning fast reflexes and accuracy. I hate playing UT2003 or Half Life with this guy because I always lose. Heck I remember playing Crimson Skies with him. He shot me out of the sky every time in about 30 -40 seconds. He was using the keyboard and I was using a JOYSTICK and I have a freakin PILOTS LICENSE !!!! damn. I was so mad I slammed my keyboard on my desk. aaaaarrrggghhhh !!!. ME WANT TO KILL !!!! varely rarely have I managed to totally own an online game and in those cases I suspect I was playing with total noobies.

| This is REALLY OFF TOPIC and should be moved to a forum where it belongs... Ok, what I experienced with 3d shooters: you have to adjust your mouse so it is VERY SLOW. While moving the mouse from the left outer edge to the right outer edge of your mousepad you should not turn more than 180 degrees - better if you turn less than that. This is hard in the beginning but as soon as you get used to it you will be able to shoot more accurate than ever before. Contrast / brightness: Ever been surprised to be shot in the darkness? Adjust brightness / contrast / gamma so that the game is bright enough that you can still see enough in dark rooms. So enemies won't be able to hind in the darkness anymore. This may cause that some coloures are not perfect or realistic but it helps alot. Graphic-drivers setting: NVidia cards have an option to render X frames ahead. Set this to 0 or 1. Everything else may cause a short delay if something unpredictable has to be rendered on the screen - like an enemy that suddenly moves around a crate or corner. Some freaks told me that you should play at 640*480 to have bigger pixels. They said that these big pixels would be easier to hit in great distances. I prefer to play at 1600*1200 so I can decide if it's an ally or enemy - it looks better and I don't buy a 500$$$ graphics card to play at 640*480 What else is important? Play UNPREDICTABLE. Don't use the same tactics over and over again. If you hide 3 times on the same place you will be killed the next time. Watch the others and where they are getting killed. If they always capture some "save" positions and wait for the enemy try to RUSH as fast as possible leaving them behind. The enemy will think that all members of your team will wait as the rounds before but you will surprise them and kill a few at once Or buy a handgun and play just for fun - sometimes this helps to relax and maybe you will get a few frags by joking around like this - positive effekts: You will have more money the next round and some fun at that round.

| the problem with being too sensitive is when u try to shoot long distances...its like trying to hit a golf ball, ur swing may only be off by less than a .25 of an inch, but 300 yrds down the fairway that .25 of an inch turns into many feet. so if ur more senstitive ur likely to aim too far off target, even though it really doesnt look like it. its also easier to keep ur crosshair on an enemy, when an enemy runs when he is far away he appears to be moving much slower than he actaully is...too sensitive and ur crosshairs will always move off target. for example on CS i play with my mouse sensitivity on one and my windows mouse sensitivity is set to only the second dash. |

| Mouse sensitivity in games should be very high - you should be able to turn at least 270 degrees without having to lift your wrist from the mousepad. Knowing the map will put you on even ground with others that know the map - not knowing the map puts you at a big disadvantage. Same with familiarity with the weapons. Never run anywhere in a straight line unless you know you're alone. Perfect being able to 'circle strafe' (circling a stationary or moving target while keeping your crosshair trained on it) |

| I used to be really good at quake back in the day, got accused of being a bot many many times. Anyways, I used to play with crazy high mouse sensitivies. I started out with it pretty low then one day jumped it up and got used to that. Then just slowly bump it up from there when practicing. When I would snipe while playing Team Fortress I had a zoom script that would also lower my mouse sensitivity real low. Most games I know of offer scripting, use it! Strafing is the most important skill you can have. Well, I donno about now since they added all the realizm stuff but a still target is a dead target. Learn to strafe. You should be able to circle around your target and not miss a shot. Used to be refered to as the circle of death. Never stop moving! Setup keyboard and mouse so the config is good for you. You should have to move a whole lot to hit all your prefered keys. Listen to your surroundings! Is there a target comming from left or right? I guess now days games are surround sound so you can listen from most directions. Ever since counter strike Ive sucked at 3d shooters. I never made the transition of being able to take 3 rockets to the head and keep moving to take a shot in the head with a pistol and die... Havent really played 3d shooters much since I stopped playing quake back in '98. Occassional LAN party CS though...I get stomped every time. Still hold up pretty good in the non-realistic games though. |

| i agree about lower sensitivity being more accurate. i play CS and used to have sens at 12-15....now i play at 2.25 and am at least twice as good (score wise).

| Ok... Games like Quake do NOT need high accuracy. You have to jump and strafe all the time. If you play something like Call of Duty or Counter Strike it's completely different. If you jump and/or run all the time you won't hit your enemy. Of course you should not wait until you get killed but you will have to slow down or even stop for a short time to aim and shoot over medium and far distances. In a close combat you should try to strafe. My advise: Kill your oponent before he gets that close to you

just get used to the sensitivity, also put mouth smoothing then the crosshair will on respond to definite inputs. Also pack all the action keys around the WSAD pad input i.e. make sure use and reload are on e and r respectively. also q is good for a previous weapon swap. try putting jump on the right click and zoom on space bar. because if ur trying to hold down the right click while moving the mouse and pressing fire (left click) at the same time is difficult however u rearely have to jump and zoom at the same time. What makes a good gamer though for definite is practise, u will have no chance at beating someone unless u know the game inside out. literally japnese gamers are mad at games that are out, u cant beat them especially arcade, coz that all they do. Also everyone has a weak spot, always try to learn what it is and exploit it. Many hours on street fighter 2 learn't me this. And never get wound up coz u lost then anyway, u cant think straight. Also make sure u play on a good ping online make sure there is nothing using the bandwidth and the server is close, if u reckon ur shooting at guys for ages and their not dying ur prolly not shooting at them because ur 0.3 of a second behind the game. Also weapons with high firing rate increased ur ping, coz more information has to be sent to the server and back. in CS it best to burst fire. try to set up ur machine so u can get a good frame rate i.e. anything over 60 fps would be good enough. lower ur resolution if the fps is too low on ur machine. that applyies whether u got a x800 or a s3 saavgeg 4 32mb gpu. for different games it better to use different controllers. i.e. playstation controller for racing games etc. etc. | |

| For online games, always remember REAL TIME lag.... It may only be fractions of a second but remember when you push the fire button: It has to be processed through your system It has to go out through the modem and numerous hops It has to be processed on the server end It has to return over numerous hops It has to be processed on your end Result: The running guy you had your sights dead on may have actually moved many frames before all that happens. Your "accurate" shot arrives at the server long after he has left that spot and you have shot way behind him. Wait for a moving target to stop in a stationary position. Good vid DOES make a difference! When the other players gripe about you making shots clean across the map ... let them know that with an Asus 9800XT you CAN see all the way across the map! Easy to spot who has a good vid card and who does not... when you see them looking right at a target that they can't see, that you would have shot! |
